covid testing at the wedding

Debbie, on February 23, 2021 at 12:54 AM Posted in California Planning 0 12

We are scheduled to get married 6/25/21 at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu CA. Our venue has a strict requirement stating you must have proof of a COVID test to attend our wedding. Wondering is this a California requirement ? Or, is this our wedding venue requirement? This requirement is crazy and we feel it’s going to detour many of our guests to not attend. Not to mention expensive!

Plus, we cannot have dancing- only restaurant level music.

We are thinking of what to do about our wedding since this is the 2nd time to postpone if we move it. Our original date was 9/11/2020. The venue is not understanding at all and we would love anyone else that has some insight on this.

Hi Debbie! The "no dancing" rule I think is for all of California (or most major counties) - and it's also in effect in a lot of other states! I'm not sure about the covid test requirement though, that sounds like it might be venue specific.

Here's discussion you should join where you can connect with a bunch of other couples getting married at Calamigos Ranch:

I feel like most people are understanding about changing dates since it is COVID season. I know where I live, I cannot get a COVID test unless I show symptoms which has included lying. I think for me it's free, but it's $25 per test so that could add up if it's a whole family.

Fellow CA bride, here. The COVID test requirement is definitely specific to the venue and is not a statewide thing. My wedding is in 2 months and our venue doesn't require it. If you really don't want to deal with it, and don't want to have to require that of your guests, the best options would probably be to either postpone again or look for another venue. They're not great options, but unfortunately these times don't leave us with many.

Hi, I know how you feel. I am a NY bride. Testing is mandatory for all weddings in NY state. Plus a bunch of other rules as of recently. I know how frustrating it can be.

New York has just made this mandatory. Starting March 15th they will allow up to 150 guests or 50% of a venue's capacity from what I remember, but one of the many requirements is that all guests MUST be tested so that they can attend the wedding. We postponed our large reception until November, but are getting married in April and have asked the small group of people who we will be having dinner with to get tested, about 20-30 people. One or two people within our family didn't love this idea, but they'll have to get over it. It can be a life or death thing, so it's obviously one of those things that are non-negotiable. Now that the governor has made it mandatory I feel a bit of relief because it will become part of a "new normal" and help to keep everyone a bit safer. *Fingers Crossed* Good Luck!

Hi! mind letting us know what county you are getting married in? So nervous about the CA restrictions in place with only 3 households and hoping that some brides have heard from venues that they might know when things will be lifted. Thank you!!!

Sure! We're getting married in San Luis Obispo county. We're definitely looking better and are now in the red tier. Our venue is privately owned and they are allowing us to move forward with our plan of about 75 guests.

I thought it was only for over 50 people for NY. Still frustrating though.

Yes it is for Weddings over 50. With the size of our families, there was no way to even get a guest list down to 50 people.

Definitely a wedding venue thing. I’m getting married at the London hotel in September and they are not requiring testing. However, they cannot guarantee that we will be able to dance. Ask your venue about proof of vaccination in substitution of testing. I know personally that majority of my guests are already vaccinated and it would be a lot easier and cheaper for me to prove guests as vaccinated as opposed to testing everybody beforehand. Especially if you have out of town guests that can’t easily access a California based test. This is all so frustrating and I hope your venue will be more understanding. Also, I believe the state of California will be posting new wedding restrictions tomorrow March 19th. At least that’s the word floating around. If the state doesn’t require testing with new guidelines then the
Venue really shouldn’t be allowed to hold that against your guests.
