Covid Props?

MK, on March 17, 2021 at 11:50 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 9

This is not a post about my personal thoughts/your thoughts on Covid

This may be controversial but I wanted to see if anyone else has noticed this --

One thing that I've seen a lot of on social media with weddings in the past year, now more than 2020, is people using masks as more of props than anything else - as if they are putting them on for pictures to be trendy. People will post their wedding pictures and one will be this beautiful photo of their large wedding party all together smiling, and the next picture is that exact photo, but it's like everyone whipped out a mask for the picture. I saw it tons with holiday family pictures, as well. Duplicate photos taken, one with a mask and one without.

Maybe I'm reading into it, but I find it kind of interesting. Is this just to be fun and kind of make light of the weird time, so they can look back at pictures in 10 years and laugh about the weird circumstances? Maybe I'm the only one who noticed! But thought I would see what ya'll think!

I have noticed pictures like that, where they have duplicate versions: one masked and one bare-faced. I'm also confused by it....if they are comfortable with being bare-faced (albeit maybe for only a few moments to snap the picture), why bother having the second photo with masks? I am just as confused about this!

Most people we know are not getting married during Covid or otherwise socializing in large groups. But I have noticed random people on social media who do this. Some people don't believe the pandemic is real so they post mocking photos and captions. The more often it happens, the longer Covid will stay.

I have totally noticed this. One of the amusing things to me is that often the people who do this are super strong on the "everyone must wear a mask" train. I always interpreted that they wanted to show/signal that they were wearing a mask, but they still wanted normal pictures.

At my first shower, my MIL insisted we take pictures with the masks because a friend of hers had made special ones and for the reasons you mentioned, what a weird time, we can look back on it! type thing. So I have two copies of photos. I didn't post any of the masked ones. I don't really want to "tell my grandkids about being a Covid bride", lol. I just want my wedding, the one we planned in 2019.

This 100%. If you're not comfortable being unmasked, then how did you take the photo? Regardless of what side you're on, why bother with the other?

On the other hand, it's mandated that masks be worn in public places and sometimes (for instance in a scenic area) my husband and I will quickly take off masks and snap a selfie just to have a moment of "normalcy".

Oh, I’m in no way insinuating that that’s not okay! You won’t find a single picture of me with a mask on, so I don’t blame you for that. I’m referring more to the ones who quite literally use the mask as a prop for pictures, when they are clearly seen in the picture before without one. It just seems a little contradicting to me!

I've seen this a lot and I see it as their way of making their followers believe that they're following safety protocols lol. It's not just influencers that I've seen do this, I've had plenty of friends on social media do this as well.

FH and I have done it sometimes when sending photos to certain family members. We take the necessary precautions when out in public, but if it's just the two of us letting our dog out for a walk...we don't see a need to wear a mask, but if we're facetiming or talking to certain family members, it's just easier to wear one. That way they don't go on a rant about us not wearing a mask, even when it's literally just me and my FH present. (we live together so we don't wear masks around one another).

This isn't part of group shots or anything, but just my personal take on that situation...I thought it was kind of weird at first too, people taking selfies wearing masks and all. But then I really started to think about it, and I'm a HUGE history buff, and I realized that we are kind of marking down history by taking those photos. Surely this pandemic will be talked about in years to come. I was actually thinking about this when my FH and I were getting our Christmas tree last year because we took a masked selfie. And I thought well this is a story I want to tell my children because when I was younger, my grandparents and parents shared stories about some of their hard times in life, and those are the ones I found most interesting. So I take them to have that piece of history so when my kids are older, I can tell them about this time and teach them a lesson about how to not take anything for granted because it could be worse. So if there are some people who think like me, maybe that's why they are doing it!

My husband and I got married last summer and we definitely wanted some pictures to document the world situation at the time and maybe put some humor into an otherwise humorless year. This is one of my favorites 🤣 Covid Props? 1
