covid Postponement and Name Change

Theadosia, on May 15, 2020 at 11:13 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11
Like many, my fiancé and I postponed our big wedding a year due to COVID-19. We are having a legal ceremony on our original date. I am planning on changing my last name but am conflicted on whether I should do it after the legal ceremony or our big wedding celebration next year. Have any brides been through this before? What did you do?

I would change my name after I got married, not after I celebrated.

I agree with Caytlyn, especially for practical reasons. Depending on where you get married, you get a "free" name change for a certain amount of time after you get married. If you miss the window, you'll have to go through the court system, which will cost extra money and time. Definitely look into the laws applicable to you before making this decision.

I agree. I was in the same boat as you but we decided a few days ago I'll go ahead and change my name when we get the papers

Our plans are similar to yours and we will be marry on our original date. I plan on changing my name ASAP. I'm a teacher/coach and for the first time in years my summer is free. If I wait to change my name on our new date "wedding date" it will be right when the school session is starting in September. I am assuming that the school year will resume as planned, but that is still up in the air ATM. Plus if we rent a car in the summer we won't have to pay for an additional driver!

I got married recently and want to change my name, but I’m having difficulty completing the task. Has anyone else been able to do it without mailing in so much personal information. I just feel that with all the required documents and info I am opening the door for potential identity theft, and I don’t want to risk that.

I'm in the same position. Got married at the end of February and received our certified marriage license the week everything shutdown 😂 I am planning to just wait, the risk of losing my passport or social security card by mailing it in felt too risky. I will start the process this summer when city offices (hopefully) reopen

The burden of proof needs to be on the one requesting the name change. Imagine if they allowed name changes without much personal information or sufficient proof? That would actually be opening up people to identity theft if you could change a name without a birth certificate, social security number, etc.

Maybe see if you can wait until your local administrative offices are open so you can go in person instead of using the mail.

That makes sense. I guess I’ll just have to wait!
