Covid-19 at our November wedding

Angela, on November 17, 2020 at 8:53 PM Posted in Community Conversations 1 12
We were 4 days into our honeymoon when we got that dreaded text that I feared receiving. A couple who attended our small wedding (60 persons) said they started getting symptoms a day after our wedding and tested positive for Covid-19. My new husband and I ended our honeymoon early to quarantine as we had both been in close encounters with the couple when they would have been their most contagious. We got our covid tests results back a couple days into quarantining and they were negative. Most people from the wedding got tested after we shared with them that two people tested positive and no one else tested positive. We also had to move the wedding reception indoors bc of bad weather and most people did not wear masks during the reception bc they were drinking. The couple that tested positive for covid-19 had light symptoms like a cold but recovered fully after a couple days.

The story of what happened at our wedding might be an anomaly or it might be the norm. It’s hard to tell bc the only news articles I’ve read about weddings during covid-19 are of nightmare scenarios where everyone got sick.

I hate that happened to you. I know how frustrating and stressful it must be.

I will say we had a 60 person wedding two weeks ago, also indoors and thankfully no one tested positive/had any symptoms. Also, I've attended three wedding this year all with guest counts ranging from 40-100 and they also had zero issues.
Saying all this I hope it eases your mind a little about the things we hear/see on social media. 🤗

Thanks for sharing. I think you're pretty lucky no one else got sick yet. Just last week, twe learned a 30 person Halloween party in my county caused nearly everyone in attendance to get Covid. At this point with the numbers so high, the chances that someone comes to a 50+ person wedding with Covid are much higher than a few weeks ago, and almost a guarantee in some states. On the other hand, my friend had a 20 person wedding two weeks ago, completely outside, everyone got tested beforehand, wore masks, and no one has gotten Covid. Plus, we live in a state with much lower rates than the Midwest. It's basically rolling the dice at this point. (Masks and other precautions make it less likely to spread if someone comes to a wedding with Covid) It's clearly possible to have a 20+ wedding with few precautions and no one gets Covid. It's also equally (and more so depending on the case load in the county where you are located) possible to have the same wedding and everyone, or almost everyone, gets it. I personally think it depends on how much risk a person is comfortable with.

My mind is certainly at ease. The whole experience changed how I see covid. I’m a lot less scared of it than I use to be.

What kinds of protocols did you put in place. My wedding is coming up soon. Ceremony on the beach. Reception in a large ball room, tables limited to families of 4 or 5 and tables spread apart. Masks and all required. Can you share what you did.

We had it all planned for all outdoors but bad weather came through so we could only have ceremony and cocktail hour. We socially distanced the chairs outside and gave plenty of room for cocktails. For dinner, i put people at tables with others that they traveled with or let me know ahead of time they felt comfortable sitting with. So we had tables of 3 up to tables of 8. For the reception part, only one person wore a mask while on the dance floor. We made the dance floor larger so people had room.

Oh and we also asked everyone to get tested before they travel and if they were not feeling well to stay at home.
