Covid-19 and less than cooperative venue

Claire, on April 24, 2020 at 7:09 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 11

Hello!

My date was June 13, 2020 and unfortunately we have had to postpone. Our venue is only letting us postpone on a weekend through the end of this year or non-peak season of next year. Unfortunately due to my fiancé's seasonal job we cannot afford to have our wedding this fall or winter. I wanted to reschedule our wedding for next May on a weekend but they are refusing to give us a weekend, Monday to Thursday only. We cannot leave our venue without forfeiting the money we have paid, which is a lot more money than we would be willing to call a "loss". Is anyone else's venue doing this, or not being very cooperative in rescheduling?

Ours initially did something kind of like that. I ended up waiting a couple more weeks to contact them again and thankfully their policy changed after that to give us the option to choose any open date next year. You could also ask them if they’d be willing to give you the weekend you want if you’re willing to pay the difference for 2021 pricing?

Hi Claire! What venue are you at? Mine is doing the same thing and I’m very frustrated about it. We’re scheduled for October 2020 and they said if we want to postpone we have to choose a new date that’s before April 2021 or a weekday (Monday-Thursday) if we’d want to reschedule for after April 2021. I don’t want to get married in the winter because our venue is outdoors and I don’t want a weekday wedding because our guests will have to take multiple days off work.

I don't want to put my venue on blast but we do live in Northern California so a lot of the restrictions are even more implemented here. I have the same feelings. My fiancé and I strategically picked a June wedding due to me finishing school and his career and even now with me starting a new career which is why we wanted to choose so far out, thinking that they would be more cooperative with us. I keep seeing all these articles saying "weekday weddings will be the new thing" with this going on but a weekday is still a weekday for me and our particular life.

Our venue is doing the same thing, we can pick any open date this year, but if we want it next year, it would be $1k reschedule fee and double what we are paying right now for the new date Smiley sad

Oh, for some reason I thought you were in PA and that we were possibly at the same venue. I think they’re just saying “weekday weddings will be the new thing” to make us feel better. But at the end of the day, we’re spending thousands of dollars on this wedding and am not willing to make compromises when we’re spending that kind of money. Also, guests will have to take multiple days off work if we have a weekday wedding, which is a lot to ask when many people are given so little time off work. I hate being a debbie downer but I’m having a hard time seeing positives in this situation.

I very carefully poured over my contract and found some wording that helped in my favor. I would recommend specifically looking at a force majoure or Hand of God clause where it would talk about unforeseen and uncontrollable events, which the pandemic is one. I hope this helps!

I feel the exact same way and you are not alone in the feeling. This is our wedding as a bride and its very important to us and something we have spent a lot of time (as also money) and certain things yo should not have to compromise about.

Thanks! Ours just says in case an act of god/force majoure cancels our wedding that the venue assumes no liability.
Were you able to find a way out with yours?

So I had to pour over our contract and in the act of god/force majoure clause it said something along the line of "in case of such event the venue will do everything they can pithing availability to reschedule the wedding." The word availability is what allowed me to have some ground to work with hem to get a Saturday in the peak season like I wanted. They quickly changed their policy to be a little inclusive but still exclude Saturdays right after I was able to change date.

Sorry for the late response, I have been remodeling our house and finalizing my graduation from nursing school!
