Courthouse vs Traditional Wedding

Alexandra, on April 15, 2019 at 5:10 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

Hi all! I got engaged right after the ball dropped on New Years Day this year so it’s been about 3 months since my life has changed for the better!! My fiancé and I have been together for 8 years before we got engaged and we don’t want an extravagant or super large wedding but we both have a decent size family and are in no rush to get married. Of course finances is a big part of planning a wedding being that I am currently in grad school with school loans and he is working to take over a family business. We are also looking to purchase a home before this year is over, so we are very budget conscious as we may be the ones funding the bulk of the wedding. He has mentioned getting married at the courthouse, but me being an only child and this being my one and only wedding I want my dad to walk me down the isle, to have that special moment with me in my wedding dress. I am very into the rustic/chic wedding venues that can hold the ceremony and reception in one place and all about the DIY projects for my wedding, so that is helping me out a little bit as I get all my ideas from Pinterest, but I don’t know whether to consider my fiance's courthouse option or first visit different venue options and get an idea of cost then go from there.

I want this be the the wedding of my dreams, but also don't want it to cost a fortune. Thanks! xoxo

Sorry I pushed post before finishing but, I just don’t know if I want to lean towards my fiancé’s option or go with my dream wedding, but figure out a way to budget it.

I'd do some research into prices around your area. Look at multiple venues, catering, DJ, photography, hair/makeup, alcohol costs, guest list size, invites, stamps, dress $, alteration $, wedding party gifts, flower costs, etc. This will give you an idea of what things cost to be able to see if you can budget it or not.

Thanks! Yes, I have made a master spreadsheet for all that so I will keep that in mind.

You can also do an intimate affair with just your immediate family members. This would definitely keep costs down, as the majority of wedding budgets go toward food/alcohol for all your guests. What about a small park wedding with a dinner reception at a favorite restaurant? Still could get all the traditions in (walking down the aisle, first dance as husband/wife, etc.) without breaking the bank.

It's pretty common nowadays for people to get married at the courthouse first and doing a separate ceremony/reception at a later time. We'll be do the courthouse this year on the same day as the ceremony next year, so we don't have to decide what date is our official anniversary. lol I had a number of grad friends do this as well as my brother in law.

My fiancee and I wanted to buy a house and still have a wedding, so we chose a long engagement. We bought our house last year and our wedding date is next year. Why not have both? I'm enjoying being "the bride" and taking my time planning in my new house. 😊

Thanks Alycia that is true! Oh like you, we definitely are not in a rush to get married because we also want to buy a house and I want to finish grad school next year! ☺️ I am enjoying being engaged...IT’S FANTASTIC

My FH and I have been engaged since Christmas 2017. I had a master spreadsheet for everything. But as I started going through and making the budget, I realized I was planning a party for everyone else. A dream wedding is great and all, but to what extent; especially since we're paying for it ourselves. We ultimately decided to have a courthouse ceremony, and have been putting money towards a Disney World honeymoon. We'll save the party for our one-year anniversary.
