Courthouse vs city hall.

Monica, on March 25, 2020 at 1:57 PM Posted in California Planning 0 8
I feel a little confused. Most courthouses do officiate/host wedding ceremonies but not most city halls right? Im having trouble finding information online. My city is small but we have a new city hall that’s really pretty. So far im only finding 2 major cities in northern California that do city hall weddings. It would be nice if my city did but I doubt it. I know my county does at the county courthouse but not sure where else.

How do u go about booking ur courthouse wedding and how far ahead of time to you reserve the date?

I think this totally depends on where you live. I just tried to google what my county does and it seems they don’t perform marriages but you can get a marriage license and they can appoint someone to be a deputy commissioner for a day to marry you. But I know 2 hours north of here in San Francisco you can get married at city hall. Also our state is currently under shelter in place which means weddings aren’t allowed until that’s lifted. But I have no idea what other cities or states are doing! I would definitely call your local clerk if they are open and ask because everything is so up in the air right now.

Yea all the courts are shut down right now so I have to wait to call. I was just trying to do my own research online but I can’t find very much information and I was getting confused too. I know for sure that my county does civil marriages at the courthouse but I couldn’t find a page online that tells more information about where to go and how to set up an appointment.
I just only found a page that says how much the cost is to do a civil marriage there.

As far as city halls. The only ones i found near me are San Francisco and Sacramento. Not really interested in either of those cities. I was just really hoping they did marriages at our local city hall cus its brand new and so pretty. Im looking to do a civil ceremony in June. So sad that our marriage license expires at the end of may!!

Hey Monica, have you had any information back from the city hall yet? Are they answering email inquiries, or are they totally shut down at this point? Is there an estimated date of when your city will reopen?

I havent even tried to reach out because my city issued a Shelter in Place directive that is scheduled to end until April 7th. Im not sure if they extended that because California shelter in place is until April 30th. But I plan to call this week coming up and call my county courthouse to ask about civil marriages in the court for June. I didn’t think to email! Maybe I should try lol

Hello. I called my city today even though they are closed to the public they are still open. Unfortunately my city does not do civil marriages.
