Courtesy blocks at multiple hotels?

Amy, on February 19, 2018 at 1:36 PM Posted in Planning 0 8
From what I've seen most hotels will offer a courtesy blocks of ten rooms that you aren't on the hook for if they aren't booked.

If you think you will need more than that but don't want to be on the hook for them or want to offer guests a choice between two hotels and still have the safety of a block, is there a reason not to get a second courtesy block at another hotel?

Are there rules against this or is it frowned upon??

Also is a year out too far to request courtesy blocks? I want to get a wedding website up before I send the STDs and would like that info provided.

I think it depends on how many rooms to think your guests might need. We ended up doing two blocks because the first hotel already had some other blocks set up and we took every room they had left but knew we would need more.

You could also do them at different price points so people have more options. I don't think there is any rule that you can only do one block.

Thanks for the insight! I didn't know if it was a contract type situation with all sort of rules attached or a more informal thing.

Do they take a credit card or anything??

You will have to contact the hotel for their policy. It varies from place to place. For ours we are not in the hook for unsold rooms but the date for people to make reservations is like 6 weeks before the wedding and after that they won't hold any rooms. They did not take credit card info.

I did three hotels because, surprisingly, a lot of hotels in the area were booked already and I could only get so many rooms in each hotel. There’s also a large event the same weekend so a lot of hotels were booked for that. I did my block in August (my wedding is May 5). I think some of the check lists say to set up the block about 8+ months before so I don’t think it’s too early.

That's good to know! I really want to offer a low cost option or two for guests that's still very close to the venue. So if I wait too long my guests will both be paying more and driving more.

I dont think its too early. We are doing two hotels. Theyre both around the same price but one is a Homewood Suites and the other is an Aloft. I know my family and the older relatives would like the homewood suites, but then the younger guests and more "hip" relatives would like the Aloft.

I have courtesy hotel blocks at two hotels; they are different prices at slightly different locations, so people will have choices depending on their budget where they want to stay.

Former hotel worker here! A year is honestly perfect. The computer systems typically recognize a year out but most people don't book that far out so you should have more wiggle room when booking blocks.

Pro tip, ask if you can put the rooms on your loyalty number. Most guests won't have one and then you get the points afterward for future travel. People who book conferences and such do this all the time so why not try for a wedding?
