I started looking around 12 months before, but I know others that have gone earlier and later!

So exciting! I was nervous because of covid that supplies would be delayed, so I went in June 2020 for our September 2021 wedding. I was told the dress would take until November to arrive. I expected that if it was delayed, that it might, with Christmas and New Years, be delayed until as late as Feb 2021, but in the end it arrived at the end of October! So I've had it in my wardrobe for a full 7 months at this point, and my first fitting isn't until next month.

So, you do need to consider how long you need for the dress to come in, plus how many months you might need for the alterations you want (mine might be extensive so the lady said to leave 3 months for them). Then on the other side of things you have the fact that you'll have to hide it from your fiance/store it for quite a while if it comes in early, plus the fact that depending on your personality, you might have dress regret or change your mind.

I'm very decisive and have wanted the same dress for a long, long time so I knew that wasn't an issue for me, but it might be for you!

Taking into consideration all of those things, I personally would suggest starting at 12 months, out, but do spend time now researching on Pinterest, saving things you like, and building up an idea of what type of dress you might want so that when you do go looking, you know what stores to go to that carry the designers you want, and the type of style you'd like to have.

I’ve been engaged for 2 years and then covid made it an extra 4 months! At the beginning it was so long but overall it goes so fast! My wedding is in two months...FINALLY! I bought my dress about 9 months before my original date. Dress regret is real. Don’t buy too early.

    Hi Heather!

I am all for looking for dress ideas now. The good news is that time is on your side, and you can figure out what silhouettes and features you like in a dress. Figuring this out early can help alleviate some of the other stress when it comes to looking for venues, officiants, invitations, etc.

Also consider going alone, or with your fiancé, or with a trusted family member or friend. The more people you bring to an appointment, the more you second guess yourself.

Do take lots of pictures of you in dresses from different angles. Wait a day or two and look at the pictures again when you have "cooled down" from the emotions. Sometimes looking at a dress after a few days changes your opinion.

Wear wedges!!! Your feet will thank you!!!

Do keep in mind that some dress models are discontinued typically around Fall. It doesn't hurt to ask for the shop to call you before a dress could be discontinued, or call them. I would say that it it wise to purchase your dress absolutely no later than 9-10 months before your wedding to avoid rush delivery and alteration fees. These could go easily into the HUNDREDS of dollars.

Hey love! My wedding is March 19, 2023 and I’m planning on looking for my wedding dress the first week of November of 2021. It typically takes around 10 months for you to get your official dress so that would mean I would get mine back September 2022 and that’s perfect because that will give me enough time to do a last fitting to make sure everything still fits, if not there will still be a little time to get things adjusted.

    Hey girl!

My wedding is April 22, 2023 as well and I already bought my dress Smiley smile I work in bridal so it's a little different for me! But, in saying that I recommend start looking AT LEAST 1 year out. It gives plenty of wiggle room for breathing room that anything may need. Most dresses take 4-6 months to come in and we recommend about 3 months for alterations Smiley smile

You can start looking whenever you feel like it, just keep in mind that you may gain or lose weight so don't commit to a particular dress right away. Take your time and enjoy the planning process. I would say 6 months out is a good time to get fitted and see if any alterations are needed.

    Hope this helps...

It looks like we are both getting hitched the same day.
