We didn't. Our pastor didn't require it and we didn't feel like we needed it. I know plenty of couples that didn't that SHOULD HAVE FOR SURE. The reason we didn't feel like we did is because we had been together for 4 years, lived together for 3, shared finances for 2, and bought a house together prior to being married. We had discussed things like politics, religion, family, raising children, finances, retirement, savings, life plans, etc. We knew about all our past relationships, any criminal history (there wasn't any but obviously it was asked & discussed), etc. We were on the same page with it all. I did buy a pre-marital book that we both read, but we didn't learn anything that we didn't already know. We had a brief rough patch with communication in the past about a year into dating, so we went to 1 couples counseling session then. Ever since then, our communication is great and we don't have issues. If we have issues in the future, we will go to counseling if needed. I think for couples that aren't on the same page with very important things like who pays for what, how much to save for the future, how many kids you want, what would happen if you couldn't have kids naturally, how you'd deal with family issues, past relationship issues, etc. should for sure go to counseling.

We are. Our pastors require us to do it and we feel that the sessions will be a good foundation for us.

Absolutely, I think its very important and so does my Fiance. I believe its a great way to dig deeper and have full understand. Also it will teach you how to move past difficult situations.

We can all take away something from counseling as individuals and as a couple.

The pastor that is marrying us required premarital counseling. We have to do six sessions and we have completed four already. We have enjoyed going. I look forward to each session! It has been very insightful! She recommends sessions to all her couples for the first year after they are married and she does them free of charge. We have already decided that we are going to do those as well and will compensate her for her time!
