Costs of Wedding Planner for Destination Wedding

Catalina, on January 23, 2017 at 2:52 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

I'm getting married in February 2018 and I have began the process of looking for a wedding planner. I'm having a destination wedding in Mexico (Rivera Maya) and it's really important that I hire a full service wedding planner. I have an specific style of wedding that I want, I want a rustic boho elegant wedding and that is expensive. Our budget is around 20k-25k and I've found an amazing wedding planner that will literally do it all for me. The thing is that they are charging me 6,500 dollars plus "all travel expenses are billed separately for 3 people i.e airfare, Hotel Accommodations for 3 nights (3 rooms), Car Rental and Pier Diem ($50.00 a day for 3 people. "

I really love this wedding planner but I don't know if its too expensive. I just need some advice. I would like to know if you think it's too expensive. Should I keep looking?

Ps. She is in the states but has a company with a team in Rivera Maya + She has the mayor rental company for weddings in the region.

Are you having it at a resort? Most resorts have wedding planners there that are included in their packages

No! I really don't want a cookie cutter wedding and most resorts do that.

If you are planning to hire a wedding planner that is not from the destination that the wedding will be, I would expect to pay a lot. They will be dealing with vendors that they are not familiar with, researching those vendors, and coordinating it all from a distance. That will take a look of their time. And they will need to travel to the destination early to be sure that everything is going as planned and handle any thing that comes up last minute. I would expect to pay for all of those travel expenses.

Can you find a wedding planner that is located where the wedding will be? You won't have to worry about their travel expenses than. And they will likely be more familiar with the local vendors and might even be able to negotiate lower rates with the vendors.

I think a good rule of thumb is about 10% of your budget. I totally agree with Nicole that it doesn't make too much sense to hire someone who isn't local or at the very least has never done an event in the area.

I am having a DW in Cancun and the resort had a wedding planner for free and she has been more than enough. If you are getting married at a resort, I strongly suggest reaching on the the planner their first. If they can't provide the service you really want, then I would look into professionals in the area.

ETA: I don't want a cookie cutter wedding either and they have ways for you to order different decor items or you can ship items ahead of time or take them with you. I am getting married on St. Patrick's day, so I have a lot of gold and emeralds that they didn't have. So I am taking a lot of decor items to make the space mine.
