Cost of alterations.. am i paying too much?!

Jenna, on May 7, 2021 at 5:39 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7

I just went for my second fitting today for my wedding dress. I had to get 7 bustle's added, hem and then a slip. Everything looks good overall but I am being charged $400 for all of the above. Originally I thought that she was including steaming into this price but after the appointment today she said it was $75 more for the steaming to get done. Does this seem reasonable? I am planning on asking for a breakdown of the price cause I'm not even exactly sure what the cost of each part it, since it doesn't show on the receipt. Thank you!!

Yes, that seems reasonable, epecially if the cost of the slip is included and depending on how many layers your dress is.

Depends on where you live, but that definitely seems reasonable to me

Thanks Sarah! I keep seeing that usually the price for alterations of a wedding dress is between $75-250 depending on how much your dress is. But the cost of the alterations is over half the price of the dress. Thanks for your insight!

My wedding dress was $500 for a hem and bustle so this seems reasonable. Bigger cities will be higher priced!

I found a local seamstress with 30 years of experience that is altering my dress with the following: cups, hem, sides, and a five point bustle for $300. I think it’s sounds pretty reasonable... slips tend to be expensive and hems depend on layers and materials.

Just to get my dress hemmed 2" would've been $1000 (more than I even paid for my dress!). But it was a reasonable quote because my dress had (iirc) 7 layers of fabric, lace appliques, and heavy heavy pearl beading. Not to mention the whole thing was box sewn on the bottom (all the layers were sewn together at the bottom hem) so I was willing to pay for the fair price of sheer effort she'd need to go through.

Thankfully when the seamstress saw it on me she told me it didn't need to be hemmed at all!
So it definitely depends on the layers and effort to put it right.
