Cost Effectiveness of DIY Fake vs Real Flowers?

Katie, on August 3, 2017 at 3:02 PM Posted in Planning 1 18

So I recently started looking up florists for my wedding and ran into a bit of sticker shock.

I really only plan on having bouquets for me and my two bridesmaids and boutonnieres/corsages for FH, groomsmen and parents/siblings. I knew bouquets would be expensive but I didn't realize how expensive.

I'm already facing the dilemma of possibly not being able to keep my bouquet since FH and I are getting married in a different state from where we live.

So I'm wondering has anyone done their own DIY fake flower bouquets before and if so was it cost effective for you vs buying real flowers? I know DIY comes with it's own costs.

I chose to have DIY flowers more because of allergies than cost. Mine cut from books then hot glued onto stem wire. So far I have spend about $40.00. I know I will need more stem wire and one other item, but I will spend less than $60.00 on all of the flowers and petal to walk down the aisle.

I would honestly try it out first before you decide to do it. I went out and bought some flowers from Michaels and Hobby Lobby that I thought would look great for my bouquet. After spending $50 on trail flowers I realized that it wasn't the flowers that made my bouquet look like shit but the way I put everything together. This is the moment that I accepted I don't have a creative bone in my body. Booked a florist a week later and our flowers were phenomenal!! I got exactly what I wanted, they smelled amazing walking down the aisle, and I do not regret spending the money on them one bit.

I found some amazing latex roses on Amazon. I think it was $25 for 50 heads and they look amazing! I haven't made up the bouquets yet, but I got blush and beige which compliment my colors beautifully. And i know I'll have extra for other decor if I want.

I am DIYing real flowers from Sam's. If I would have done fake flowers they would have been real touch and the real touch are more expensive that real flowers.

My venue doesn't allow for real flowers (a butterfly house!) so I am making my own book page flowers which cost me about $20 for all the supplies to make. They are going really well but each flower takes about 10-15 minutes, if you are into that look I highly recommend it!

If you are looking at silk flowers I agree with Katie, try and make a bouquet yourself (just one) and see how it goes before you invest for all of them.

I had to meet in the middle, so I will be using both. All the bouquets, corsages and bouts will be real, but the garland will silk, unless we find a really good deal on a bulk sight. The total cost of all the real flowers is $700.

I'm in Los Angeles and we have a Flower Mart downtown. I'm getting gorgeous roses from there for $16 per 2 dozen. I'm buying like 600 roses and doing my own centerpieces because I wanted lots of fresh flowers.

Thanks for all the responses and suggestions. I'll definitely take a look at seeing if I have enough artistic talent with one bouquet before I go crazy. I'll also decide if I think fake flowers will look nice enough.

I bought some of the sola flowers (soft wood flowers) and they look very real. I like that I'm able to dye them to be the shade that I want. I found that they were actually much cheaper than the filler dried flowers I bought from Michaels. Saveoncrafts is a website that also sells them at a discount.

Nice silk flowers are not cheap. Our centerpieces were silks for other reasons not $.

I had real flowers that were in season for the BP and at the last minute splurged on peonies for my bouquet.

Are you going with specific requests? Inspiration pic?

Can you give them a budget and ask what they can offer?

How many pieces are you making and how will you travel with them?

I'm getting fake that I found at hobby lobby. They have sales on their floral stuff all the time (50% off right now) so I priced out the ones I know I want. I'm a SAHM so I have time and will be doing my bouquet, BM bouquets and centerpieces for about $500 as long as I buy them on sale. The largest ones are even real touch. This was just messing around with ideas

So a few weeks ago I ran into a bride that didn't have the money to buy flowers..she said she only had 2weeks to plan her small wedding simple and basic due to her fh coming down unexpectedly.with her working and doing things herself she totally forgot about the flowers and so I went to Walmart got the supplies for under $30.I attended the wedding and the bridesmaids loved the bouquets the brides family loved them a plus all were excited that they could keep them forever put them in a vase after.its your wedding if you don't mind fake flowers go for it. I will be getting married soon and doing all arrangements, bout, bouquets, flower headbands myself..It's not so hard it's simple definitely get an idea then make one till you got it how you want it before cut everything also you might find a crafty person who would help you out putting them together.
