So, I recently became unemployed AGAIN, bad year for employment, and looking for ways to cut costs for the wedding. Thankfully, we are all set financially on the basic stuff and can have a modest wedding. To save my sanity from obsessing over my latest career failure, I decided to pick a youtube video tutorial for diy wedding/special occasion makeup ( a beautiful natural and romantic look, with a moderate dramatic eye look - faux lashes), and then calculate the cost of the makeup and brushes that will be needed to create the look with practice over the next 10 months. This is what I came up with: To hire a professional makeup artist, who will travel, including trial charges/tips, would cost anywhere from $350 - $500 in my area (Massachusetts). However, MUA's won't usually take a job if there is only 1 person they have to come out for. And I don't blame them for that. So, now we are talking $750 - $1,000 for a MUA to come out and do bride and a couple of bridesmaids. Cont.

I agree that sounds way high for a MUA. I am getting married in Boca, a very pricey area. I'd say bride hair AND makeup typically runs $250 for my area.

I was able to cut costs a bit by finding a salon that charges by the hour, not per person. I too am paying for them to travel to our bridal suite--it comes to $50 per stylist.

First off, if you are planning on getting your makeup done by a professional, I would definitely do shopping around. $3-400 just for makeup sounds like way too much.

Secondly, there are tons of makeup brands and brushes that don't cost an arm and a leg to get. Most importantly, it's also about the art of application. Doesn't matter how expensive your brush or makeup is, if it's not applied correctly it won't look good anyway. I would check out Carli Bybel and Nicole Guerriero on YouTube (one of Nicole's fav foundation is actually Loreal) They are awesome! And use all types of makeup brands and brushes. A lot of them swear by Sigma Beauty and BH Cosmetics for brushes and you can get discounts!! Just as good quality as MAC but half the price.!!

It can be done!! Just do more research.

Tough call. If you can book and cancel a MUA without penelty I would book but practice on cheapier make up to see if you ca. Master the skill. I am lucky MUA is free and it would cost me a ton to buy my own make up.
