Corset back on this dress?

Jessica, on June 7, 2020 at 3:18 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16
Would it be possible to add a corset back on this dress? I love it and it’s super on sale, but it’s a size 10 and I’m fitting into a size 14 at the moment. Do you ladies think it’d be possible to add a corset to it and make it a bit bigger? The bodice has beading, so I’m not sure if it’d be an issue.

You cannot add the 4-6 inches difference between the sizes all in the center back. Not possible, even if you get an inch out of both side seams. You would have to add some fabric in front and at sides. Which means removing all beadwork, discarding beads you cannot match, and redoing all new beadwork over the new and old fabric. Each can be done. If you had matching fabric and beads. But so time consuming to take apart every seam in the dress, add panels of new fabric, then corset, then sew gown together, then do beading. It would cost more than going to the seamstress and saying, make me this dress in my size.

I think it’s doable. Who is the designer and what’s the name of the gown some of us “dress detectives” on here may be able to find it in a 14 for you.

The designer is Morilee! I believe this style is 5565. I found this one for $500 because it’s a sample dress. I’ve been trying to find one in my size all day! I appreciate it Smiley smile

That sounds like a lot of work! I went to a bridal boutique yesterday and tried on a similar style dress in a size 10. It was only a couple of inches from zipping. The consultant said that you can easily add a corset to that one, but I didn’t want to spend $1,100+ tax on that dress as I’m on a tight budget. It was the Maggie Sottero “Charlene” gown if you’d like to check it out and compare!

    Oh and between a size 10 and 14, it’s only a 2-3 size difference I believe!

I found it in a 20. It will be easier to take it in than to let it out. And gowns run smaller so this may be closer to a 18 or 16. It has the measurements listed to you can compare yours.

I've started searching for you! This is a size 12, but they have the measurements listed so maybe it would work! https://poshmark.com/listing/Morilee-wedding-gown-Misty-size-12-ivory-Aline-5e75155f2e7c2f896832a708

And as far as adding a corset to make it bigger, I would recommend consulting with a seamstress/tailor. It's often possible, due to the seam allowance, to let a dress out some, at the very most two sizes. But if you want a corset regardless of the size, it would probably be a fairly pricey alteration to add as others have said.

I know this isn’t the same but it’s similar, you’d just have to add straps and it’s only 350.

In order to stitch in a piece, like a corset back, you should have at least a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Meaning, you stitch that far in from the edge of the fabic. At the edge, the stitching would pull out as soon as you tugged on it. Very stable stuff like denim or sheets, you can go as little as 1/4 inch extra material. Even a quarter inch on each side of the corset would be 1/2 " total. Plus the sizes are 3.5 apart. 3.5 plus .5 = 4 or 3.5 + 1 = 4.5
So depending on whether you used .25 or .5 seam, 4 to 4.5 inches material needed to increase 2 sizes.

The issue with adding all 4 inches in the middle of the back, is that the low point of your armhole, and the sheer inset down to the waist, would now be slid foward, not located under your armpit, but under the side of your breast. You cannot let your armhole not be under your arm. And though sometimes all the additional area is accross your back, when there is a 3.5 inch all the way around size difference, some of the extra inches on your body are in the front . You at least have to add to the side front. and side back. More that 20 years doing gowns, I know that it is too costly .
except the particular strap location, that is a classic style, always around in more than one line. So you can, as people have pointed out, find others. Between current and past few years, at least 4 different maker and fabric versions are available. Better to find a look alike dress within budget. It is like a classical ballet dress, only longer. Any seamstress can make one, if they do gowns. And if you buy previously worn, altering down is a piece of cake, max 2 sizes. Then you get issues, you cannot reposition armholes, rearrage bust. Use the size chart, if you go across makers. A nice similar Mon Cheri or Jasmine look alike? Search Mon cheri size chart or Jasmine Bridal size chart. So you may find, a size 12 or 16 in that company equals a size 14 Maggie Sottero. Measure yourself, and look for the size in the maker chart of the gown.

Jessica, I do not know how much you want the specific dress, with the pattern of lace and crystals, slit sheath of tulle, of that exact dress. Or if it is a type of dress you like. In their $350 to $500 range, that they will make to your measurements, or standard, and that they will send to try on, Azazie has several natural waist, sheath or A-line of tulle or organza ( has a sheen tulle does not, similar.) V front, some sheer side inset, lace bodice . Some different shoulder or strap styles. None have crystals or rhinestones that I remember, but that is the easiest thing to add to a dress, because it goes on top of a finished dress easily. If you are interested in the type, it is your price range for a reputable company. This is one a niece was looking at:
    https://www.azazie.com/products/azazie-marcella-wedding-dress?color=diamond-white

This is a contender, because she is full busted. We would bead ithttps://www.azazie.com/products/azazie-robyn-wedding-dress?color=ivory
If this one, she wants crystals and rhinestones, with a line if them on each spaghetti strap.https://www.azazie.com/products/azazie-rhapsody-wedding-dress?color=diamond-white/champagne
None of these are your dress, I did not look through their search. But if this orice range suits you, look by the features that matter most, or at every dress. If you go looking for pre-owned Charlene, search also for Charlene Lynette. It is the same design, but cut proportionately a little fuller through the bust. I love Maggie's, and Sophia Tolli. But sometimes looking out of price range is just frustrating.A couple years ago and currently, Jenny Woo has had some sweet boho slim tulle skirt dresses, too. Good luck!

Personally, I don’t think so. The bodice(top) is detailed along with the buttons which trail down the skirt which would be messed up with a corset in middle.
