Coronavirus & Destination Weddings

KC Schanbaum, on March 10, 2020 at 4:57 PM Posted in Planning 0 11

Hey all,

I'm close to signing a contract with my vendor/resort in The Bahamas for my destination wedding in January 2021.

I know this is a long way out, but do you think I should be concerned? What preventative measures have any other destination-wedding brides taken? Should we have them add language to the contract about Coronavirus?

Also, as the bride and groom, we get certain perks if we book 90% of our room block -- do you think it's worth negotiating that percentage down given people may be less likely to attend because of the Coronavirus?

Any Coronavirus-related advice is appreciated. Thanks all!

If it were me, I would talk with them add COVID-19 specific exceptions. Negotiate that block price too! It is probably far enough out things will die down, but I always opt to be safe and not sorry. Surely (and hopefully) they are already familiar with these concerns, so they should handle it well and make sure everything is still how you want it. Good luck!

I would ask the venue about canceling due to an epidemic. But then again, my suspicions are this will be done by elections - I was reminded that EVERY presidential election year there is a viral epidemic that causes pandemonium.

I suspect your January wedding will be fine

Maybe get insurance but I am sure it will be under control by 2021. I am getting married outdoors in November this year and I am not worried as I am sure it will be done by then. Smiley smile

Travel insurance and wedding insurance do not protect against epidemics

Good point but I still would not worry for an event in 2021.

I would be concerned. New CDC guidance warns the elderly (i.e., those over 60) and those with underlying health problems to avoid “non-essential travel such as long plane trips.” A vaccine is probably a year to a year and a half away, and it seems unlikely that we will have fewer cases before that. So I suspect that you will get a lot of declines based on that.

I would try to negotiate the percentages down, and maybe even get insurance that covers cancellations "for any reason." (There is insurance like that.)

You should get insurance. This is so far in the future. You might be more worried about hurricane season in Bahamas.

I assume caronavirus will join Zika and swine flu in the "what was that epidemic?" fame. I wouldn't be concerned at all.

I personally wouldn't sign. My wedding is this September and my family is already pressuring me to postpone. I would wait at least 2-3 months to see how this plays out and then book your venue. don't be like me where i'm frantically calling vendors to find out if California goes on lock down would they allow me to change / postpone my date.

Hey so I lived in the Bahamas for several years and have family and friends there now. Currently there are no reported cases of covid 19 in the Bahamas. They do need to take action immediately before it does spread there because the healthcare system is crap. As it is though, I imagine your wedding would be perfectly fine there next January, congratulations by the way!! If I were you though, I would hold off on the vendors until some of this blows over just in case or get insurance of some kind, I like to be safe than sorry. What is the place your thinking of doing your wedding at? I really don’t think anybody’s going to be booking ahead of you especially not during this time. And I also know lots of venues and vendors etc I’d be happy to share with you. Have you considered doing the wedding on rose island? its just a 20m boat ride away from the nassau but you could throw a dope private beach wedding there for super cheap if you get a caterer and a boat n captain (this was my dream but I have other plans now). Ps try negotiating and not to mention wedding because that may drive up the price.
