Cookie Bar - To Bake or Buy?

Wendy, on February 2, 2015 at 8:00 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 13

My fiance and I are looking to do a cookie bar for our wedding. I am concerned about the stress of baking a ton of cookies days before the wedding. We are definitely on a budget but I don't know if it's worth the stress. Does anyone have any suggestions for a place to get an assortment of cookies (chocolate chip, raisin, oatmeal, etc) in NJ? Our wedding is at the Bridgewater Manor and we live in West Orange so really anything in between or the vicinity is fine.

Also, how do we decide how many cookies to buy or make if we decide to go that route? We are inviting 110 - likely to be 90-100 at the wedding. I don't want an abundance of leftover cookies after the wedding but I don't want people to get jipped out of them either.

Thoughts???? Smiley smile

I can speak to quantity... if you aren't have other items as part of a dessert bar, I'd assume everyone would have around 3 pieces per person (also depends on the size). As for vendor, try to reach out to some bakers on cookies. I'm sure they could easily dish out dozens: https://www.weddingwire.com/shared/Search?geo=west+orange+nj&cid=2&aovt=y&l=y&mm=n&vss=y&view_type=photo

Good luck and I love this idea, I L O V E cookies and wish I would have done this at my own wedding!

What about Sam's or Costco? I think most have a bakery.

I'm making mine. Our wedding is about 3.5 months away and I just started now. I made the dough from scratch and rolled the dough into little pre-portioned balls. I have a vacuum sealer which helps. I sealed the cookie dough balls and froze them. That way the day before I can enlist my younger sisters/cousins/whoever wants to help to just place the dough on cookie sheets and bake. Should be easy and tastier than store-bought.

Are any family members or friends willing to help out? Might be a way to lessen the stress if you do end up baking them yourself. Something you might want to confirm.. Our venue doesn't allow us to bring in home baked goods - has to be from a company Smiley sad. I'm not sure if this is a common rule or not.

Ditto to what Kendra said. I'm doing the same thing. Premaking and freezing the dough. It's really easy if you use a cookie scoop. You can bake the day or 2 before but that's easy. You can still do other things at home at the same time and have others help you.

I'm making enough for 4-5 a person. They will be smaller sized cookies and all delicious. I'm so excited

Sams or Costco gets my vote. Is it cheaper to make them yourself? Probably, but do you really have time for that? Probably not.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I'm definitely going to confirm whether my venue will allow me to bring in baked goods first and then I think I might get family to help me out with baking. Our rehearsal dinner is actually 2 nights before the wedding so as long as I can stay organized, I can spend the day before the wedding baking.

We are doing the same thing, but I don't think that I would want to make the cookies! Mainly because we are having 300 people at the wedding. Have you found any good vendors to purchase? I looked into Costco, but they were actually pretty expensive. I'm in the West Coast, so things might be different, but would love to hear what you decided on! Smiley smile

We actually decided to use Costco for three out of the the five types of cookies! Costco had a really large box of cookies (60) for $16 which was pretty good compared to others we found. We are also making "tuxedo oreos" which are just oreos half dipped in white chocolate and cookie brownies which a family member is making for us. Since we decided on a total of 300 cookies (thanks to everyone's suggestions!), we only need to make 60 each of the oreos and cookie brownies

    Hope that helps!!
