Do you recommend having a contract for all vendors? Specifically, a photographer?

Please don’t take any offense from my comment, my intentions with this comment I suspect may have been perceived by you very differently to what I intended.

The point of it is that any reputable vendor will have a standard contract they offer (at least where it is a vendor that asks for a deposit) and it is not anything majorly complex where dealing with such vendors. A contract serves to protect two parties so it is most definitely for your benefit to have one than not. Just because it is an inexpensive job doesn’t mean you want to accept risk in the worst case scenario (which we obviously all want to avoid).

You gave polite and valuable advice. Unfortunately, some people only post on these forums for validation and people who agree with their opinions, not genuine feedback. Sorry that OP wasn't very kind to you. Smiley sad

100% always get a contract. Our photographer even does contracts for regular family sessions. If you don’t have a contract, you have no recourse if the photographer/any other vendor doesn’t perform the service you paid them for.

I agree with all the previous comments - 100% yes, I would recommend that you get a contract from all vendors, especially for photography, and regardless of price. Things like number of pictures you'll receive, when/how you'll receive them, what they'll do if the photographer you hired is sick (or has an emergency) on the day of the wedding (will they send a replacement? Refund you? Etc), and things like that should all be included in the contract.

Definitely have a contract for ALL vendors. If not you're setting yourself up to possibly get screwed over

Absolutely get a contract for anyone you hire to do work. Wedding related or not, expensive or not. It's for your protection as well as theirs.

I agree! She very politely gave solid reasons why you need a contract and didn't deserve that response.

    Hi Caytlyn,
This was not the case. I actually feel taken back by most of your replies. I've also had other users email me saying they felt the same way. I'm okay with any feedback as long as it's polite and unfortunately I didn't feel this way about her reply, and on multiple occasions I felt hurt by your replies, Caytlyn. Pleaee think it over. Take care.

This is a bit extreme. I’ve been on these forums a long time and Caytlyn gives sound advice. Something not being what you want to hear and something being hurtful are not the same thing.

I'd be glad to think it over. Can you let me know what I said that was so terribly hurtful to you?

Even for minimal photography service, you'll want a contract that spells out the details, and you'll still want to ask questions. What's their turnaround time? How are the photos delivered? What happens if they get sick or have an emergency and can't come to your elopement?

We had contracts and paperwork for everything, from speaker rental to our officiant to our cake. It's just a safer bet on all fronts. Good luck!

Absolutely! I would have never booked with a vendor that did not provide a contract signed by us and them. It is literally the only way to protect yourself.
