Contact lenses

ValZtoB, on December 29, 2014 at 9:16 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

First, let me say that I am going to go to the eye doctor and address all of this. However, I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience.

I have been wearing contact lenses since 1994. A couple of years ago, I went for my regular eye exam and got contact lenses and ended up with extremely red eyes from wearing them. I switched brands twice and had the same issue. So, I have been wearing my glasses for over a year now.I do not like wearing my glasses. I have never felt like it is me. I want to wear contact lenses for the wedding.

Has anyone else had this experience? Have you ever worn contacts and then all of a sudden not been able to? Does anyone have particularly sensitive eyes and maybe he can recommend a particular brand? Thank you.

Actually I have heard of this happening to someone I know. She ended up just sticking with glasses.

Try different brands, types of lenses and solutions.

Turned out I was allergic to one solution (my eyes didn't hurt, but they were red -- I got a lot of sympathy from people).

If your eyes get dry, there are different contacts to try.

You mentioned switching brand.. have you also tried switching the type of lens (i..e from monthly to daily disposables)? I used to wear monthlies, but I suffer from chronic dry eyes (it got to the point where I was risking causing permanent damage to my eyes) so I had to switch to daily disposables... they are more breathable and there is no protein build up since you only wear them once. They have helped me greatly, even though I still have to use eye drops regularly. They are a bit pricier but I LOVE them (and don't like wearing glasses) so its worth it

This happened to my cousin...she had to wear glasses for like a year too. She's going to go to a different eye doctor and try contacts again...I agree with Missy though...maybe try a different type too. Contacts give me headaches so I honestly usually just wear my glasses and wear contacts on special occasions like my wedding and they didn't bother me on that day at all.

Maybe trying switching up the type of lens, like Missy suggested. You may also want to try wearing your contacts less. I started doing this, per recommendation from my optometrist, after my eyes became dry and red. I put in my contacts before work, and then take them out immediately when I get home. The rest of the night I wear glasses. This helped me significantly. I have sensitive eyes and I wear Biofinity Toric. They've been working for me for the last 3 or 4 years. They are monthlies. Good luck! Smiley smile

I would try to switch solutions. Try and get one that has no preservatives bc they can cause a buildup in your eye which causes the red eye and irritation. I use BioTrue and it is amazing!

Thanks everyone! I did switch brands of lenses, but I did not try daily disposables and I did not switch my solution. So I will try those things and also whatever the doctor suggests. Thanks again.

What solution did you use? Clear Care is the best. I use the monthly disposables now. My eye doctor lets me try a pair before I order for a full year. If they aren't working, I come back and try a different brand. I'd see if yours will let you. I use myeyedr and they're a chain, so you may have one near you.

Have you seen an ophthalmologist, a medical eye doctor, versus just someone who checks your vision? I had something similar to this and found out I had abrasions on my eyes. I was prescribed drops and was told not to wear contacts for I think 3 weeks. I ended up going much longer than that with glasses and had to slowly reintroduce myself to contacts. Like when you first started wearing them, you probably only wore them for a few hours at a time instead of all day.

I'm not saying I had the same problem as you, but I would highly recommend seeing an ophthalmologist if you haven't already. And if they continue to bother you, I probably wouldn't recommend wearing contacts at your wedding. You don't want to mess with your eyes.

Oh, and what Stephanie said. Clear Care is the best!

@Rebecca. I have traditionally only gone to an optometrist to have my vision checked. However, getting older and with this new problem, I did make an appointment to see an ophthalmologist on the 14th. Hopefully, I can get some answers. Thank you

Mine itch today because I ran out of solution so I stored them overnight in water. I look like a red-eyed demon. Definitely don't do that. lol

A couple years ago, my eyes started getting red and light-sensitive with my contacts, turned out that I had a bacterial infection (which was then treated). But in the process of rechecking for the infection, I was diagnosed with dry eyes, which had contributed to the infection. I was on Restasis for a while, plus eye drops, and it was ok to wear my contacts with, but I never bothered to refill the prescription and have basically been just wearing my glasses. My days are too long to just wear contacts and I don't want to commute on the train with contacts, case, solution, glasses, etc.

Snarky, you should take those out - there are tons of bacteria in water. The contact then holds the bacteria in your eye so it can take hold. I won't link you to the terrible things that can cause but definitely get those out of your eye and throw them away and use a new pair.

I had a similar issues a few years ago. I ended up being allergic to the solution. Once I stopped using it everything cleared up (this might be your case). My eyes become very red and swollen and I had to wear glasses for a while. I second trying the BioTrue contact lens solution. I noticed a difference in the feel right away.

I also have sensitive eyes and can only use Acuvue Oasis with Hydroclear. Breathable contact lenses dry out my eyes even more - they cause my eyes to redden and makes it feel like my contacts are sticking to my eyeball. They also let in so much air that if you suffer from other allergies those might not be the best for you either. I needed ones that gave extra moisture.

Try switching solution - H and I use different brands because I'm allergic to something in his and his eyes get red and itchy if he uses mine!

@Rebecca I think you're a bit misinformed on the differences between ophthalmologists and optometrists. Both have doctorates and the only difference is that ophthalmologists can perform surgery and cut into the eye while optometrists can not. Both professions treat eye diseases equally. If you're just seeing someone who "just checks your vision" you must not be seeing an eye doctor.

Meh, I'll take my chances. :-) I definitely won't do it anymore though. I forgot how much it sucks. I used to put them in water all of the time in college.
