Considering switching photographers

Claire, on July 10, 2022 at 1:17 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 8
My partner and I got engaged last fall, and I knew with the pandemic that photographers/videographers were getting booked up fast, so I wanted to make sure I booked mine early. I was between 2 photographers, and I ended up going with one that I know through some friends. I haven’t signed a contract, I emailed her and said we wanted to work with her. We set up a date to take engagement photos. The week before we were going to take the photos, she emails me and suggests we reschedule due to things outside of our control, totally fine. I suggested another weekend, she said she might have plans so she would have to let me know. I said no problem, let me know. It gets to a few days before that weekend, and I hadn’t heard from her. I emailed her and suggested a handful of other dates that we could do (since that weekend obviously wasn’t going to work). She said she only had one weekend available, and then she was booked until October. I was a little annoyed by this, but agreed to the date that she sent. That was 10 days ago and I have yet to hear from her. Is this a red flag? Since I haven’t signed a contract, am I even allowed to switch photographers? Is that a faux pas?

Ehh, What date did you go with? It seems like no matter what date you schedule with her she’s not available. Maybe she’s in her busy season. Who knows. You’re not obligated to stick with her since you haven’t signed any paperwork. I’d say try to find someone else and see if she get back with you regarding the date you selected.

Since you haven't signed a contract with her, you are certainly able to easily switch photographers! Even if you had signed a contract with her, you still could switch (though you'd most likely have lost your deposit).

As for whether that's a red flag, was there something in your email confirming the date that she needed to respond to? If you didn't have a specific question, she might not have thought to reply. You could try sending a follow-up email with something along the lines of, "Just wanted to confirm that our date is locked in for our engagement photo session on [date]? Is there any other information that you need from us at this time?", and see if she responds.

If you do decide to switch to a different photographer, I would wait to let your current photographer know until you have signed a contract with someone else.

Book a weekday evening with her. Outdoor lighting is better at twilight anyway. It's a good sign that she is in demand and working on weekends, which I assume are weddings and parties. For business purposes, those would take priority over a 2-3 hr engagement session. I agree unless you had a question in your email, she may not have thought to answer and hasn't yet shown she is unreliable, just booked. Try alternative dates if you want to book.

Find another Photographer. You are the customer and should not have to chase the vendor. This is bad service from the beginning.

I did respond with a question, I asked if we could secure ___ date to take the photos. I’ll probably be sending a follow up email. I guess I just feel like if I have to constantly be sending follow up emails, it makes me wonder if she really wants to be doing this

I would change it since you didn't sign a contract. I also think you have some time before you need to book a photographer. You can also wait it out and see if your photographer reaches out to you in the next few weeks. If not, I would just drop.

I booked mine 6 months prior to my wedding, and he is absolutely amazing.

I’ve been looking into other photographers in my area and with covid pushing weddings back, most of the good ones are booking now for ****, so I don’t want to wait too long and then find out everyone is already booked you know? I sent a follow up email to my photographer yesterday, so I’ll wait and see if she responds for now
