Connected E-Ring and Wedding Band?

Ashley589, on May 20, 2016 at 3:41 PM Posted in Community Conversations 0 18

I have an oval-shaped E-ring with a halo, so it has been really difficult to come up with a design for the wedding band. I really want a straight band that lies up against the E-Ring, but I don't want a jacket that has to come up around the halo.

Multiple jewelers have told me that it's only possible to get the look I'm going for if I have a ring that comes up the sides and then has a gap where the halo is (like a horseshoe shape) and will have to be soldered to the E-Ring.

What are your thoughts on the soldering (aka the E-ring and the bands are connected and can't come apart)? The only cons I can think of are that I will technically be wearing the wedding band before the wedding and it might be weird at the actual ceremony? I don't have a problem with either of those things but didn't know if there's some other downside I'm missing.

Here's a picture of my ring if that helps with my description:

My SIL has a similar ring and had to do that for her wedding band. I don't have a picture but it turned out absolutely stunning. Before the wedding she just wore it so the wedding band was facing the outside and then when they got married he of course put it on with the band on the inside like its traditionally supposed to be.

@Samantha..what a great idea!! I am glad to hear you say it turned out looking nice because that was definitely one of my worries. I don't think I have ever actually seen this done before so I'm not sure what to expect.

@Alexandra - thank you so much!

I had a similar problem. My ring has a weird indent on the band and the only way to make the bands flush was to get them custom made and then get them soldered so they wouldn't slip. Picture is blurry, but you get the idea. I love that they're soldered now, because the month or two after the wedding they would slip all the time and when they didn't line up it was super uncomfortable.

I actually want to mend mine together. I have half diamond band that would line up perfectly with my E-ring and I wouldn't want it spinning, I know its ridiculous but it would make me crazy.

@Kristen- thank you so much for the picture that's really helpful! You can't tell they're connected which is what I like about it!

ETA: What I mean by that is that it still looks like an engagement ring and a wedding band rather than one giant ring.

No problem! I was nervous about how it would turn out, but you can only tell they're soldered together on the back of the ring.

My engagement ring was a family heirloom so it came attached to the band - but it was attached in a very different way than soldering. On the back side, there was a small clasp with two tiny screws in it that held the two tightly together. When I took it to the jeweler to remove it so I could wear just the engagement ring for a while, they said they had never seen anything like it before. When removed, the integrity of the ring and band were perfect. I asked if they would try to save the clasp so I could get it put back on once I'm married. I love that it was different and original to the ring so it will be put back on in a few months Smiley smile

It may be worth discussing with a jeweler to see if they could make something like that for a U shaped band.

I'm having mine put together. I'm turning them in for the "procedure" about 3 weeks ahead of the wedding and won't wear it until the big day. I won't feel right wearing my wedding band before we're married so I'm just going to have to go without my ER for a few weeks. Man that's gonna suck!

Ashley- I'll give you a unique perspective as a bride-to-be and a jeweler! I think the type of band you're talking about is probably a good idea, but don't see any reason why they would HAVE to be soldered together. If you're always going to wear them together (meaning you're not going to wear the band or eng. ring by themselves at any point), soldering is a good idea because it helps the rings not rub against each other which would cause them to wear quicker. My advice would be to get the band and use just that for the ceremony and then after the wedding you can have them soldered together if you'd like! Without seeing the eng. ring in person it's hard to tell, but you could also look into having the band made with some sort of little hook that would hook into the undercarriage on the engagement ring and hold them together that way- without soldering.

@MeantToBeAKennedy thank you so much! The reason they say I need them to be soldered is that otherwise the band wouldn't stay on my finger. I will definitely look into the hook option!

I have two matching bands to go on either side of my e-ring, and I am taking them in to the jeweler to be soldered about 2 weeks before the wedding. (That was the timeline they suggested). So I won't be wearing any ring at all for a couple of weeks, and then will just wear my soldered ring beginning when we exchange vows.

I will never solder my rings together. There are plenty of times I want to wear just my wedding band - like to the gym or the beach. My friend soldered her rings together, and now she can't wear them late in her pregnancies and now not at all because 3 babies later, her fingers are too big! She has an anniversary band she never got around to soldering to the other side (although that was her plan) and she now wears just that.

I have a solitaire and an enhancer as my e-ring and I had them soldered together...it was like that for about a month before I couldn't take it anymore. I have big knuckles so having such a thick band was uncomfortable when trying to get it on and off.

My e-ring has bands soldered on each side (designed that way). I have one band to wear when I don't want to wear my e-ring.

Uh well... I had the same issue... Kind of. I am just having post-wedding modifications so mine will sit flush together, I'm just going to wear them separately for two weeks until I can get it done. Will it fall off if its not soldered or will the ring stay on? If it will, I'd wait until after the wedding, personally. But definitely solder after the wedding because them rubbing together is hard on both rings. Here's what mine looks like until after post-wedding mods. It'll just have to do for a few weeks.
