Confused about venue deposits

Abbi, on July 13, 2017 at 4:19 PM Posted in Planning 0 14

So I just got engaged, and I have contacted a few venues that we would like to get married at. I'm confused about the deposits, because I'm not sure where they go to. For example, I have a vendor that quoted me a $2000 deposit to reserve the date, $2500 10 months prior, and $2500 6 months prior. There is also a $3750 venue rental fee and a $1500 ceremony fee. Plus food and alcohol. I'm just not sure where the deposits go to, and if I'm understanding it correctly. I will be going to check them out, but most venues have this type of deposit set up, so I wanted to see if anyone could help me understand it! TIA!! (:

All of my deposits go toward food and drinks. But check the contract and with the venue coordinator before you pay anything.

That sounds like an initial deposit plus a payment schedule. They should go towards your food and alcohol costs, ceremony fee and venue rental fee.

That's 23k!!!! What kind of venue are you looking at!?! That's crazy town for a venue without a food package. Are you sure the $3750 + $1500 aren't the prices and the deposits are just the schedule of when payments toward the cost are due??

Hmmm, I may be wrong, but some of those deposits may be going towards the overall payment for the wedding at the venue. That was what our deposit for reserving the date was for at least. I'm confused about that additional venue rental fee and ceremony fee, unless if this place just likes to take money. :/ Did they explain each deposit any further?

Hi, all of the venues I visited had a breakdown of all the costs and a payment schedule accordingly, its easier seeing it on paper when you go tour. It depends also if it is an "all inclusive" venue or if you have to get a caterer seperately so its very important to ask exactly what is in their price quote. For example one place we looked had a ceremony fee that did not include chair rental, chairs were an additional $5 per person, so this really affected the cost. But all your deposits should go toward your final bill. The place should work with you to really make sure you understand, if they rush you or are unclear I would be cautious.

My deposit goes towards damage control and date holding. If no damages are made, we get the money back.

Hi Abbi! I'm not sure if there is specific allocation to the rental fee vs. food and booze, but it's all coming off of the same total Smiley smile

When you pay the $2,000 deposit to hold your wedding date - it is $2,000 towards your total bill with that venue (unless explicitly stated otherwise, and the word choice of "deposit" wouldn't really be accurate). The deposit and payment schedule are essentially your payment plan.

Don't hesitate to ask each venue for more clarity on the pricing and payment structure!

Hmm I think it differs by venue. Ours charged a flat fee for rental (ceremony and reception). We had to put 25% down of that fee when we signed our contract. There were some venues I looked at that had separate fees for venue and ceremony. None of that included food or alcohol. Yours sounds like it could be an all inclusive? When in doubt, ask!

Usually the deposits go towards the cost of the food and alcohol. My venue was only 3750 for venue & ceremony site and it was 3000 deposit and the. 2000 a few months later. That extra was added to the bill of the food.

Our deposit is part of the total amount to rent the venue. BTW the amounts you gave don't really add up. If the ceremony fee is $3,750 and the reception fee is $1,500 where is the additional $1,750 going?

Our venue total cost is $1300. We have to put down $250 just to reserve the date and we just have to pay the rest at least 30 days prior to the event.

My deposit was $600 to reserve the day and my final payment wasn't due until 10 days before the wedding.

The deposits are normal. Mine was $2000 to hold the date at the initial booking, then $2000 8 months before the wedding, and the balance three weeks before the wedding.

All. The venues we have looked at the deposit goes toward our final balance. Except for one. That venue takes a 2000 dollar security deposit and in the words of the cooridinator "you get it back a week after the wedding as long as nothing gets seriously damaged, or grows legs and walks off. " Still need to clarify what constitutes as 'serious damage' before we decide if thats the olace to book.

I would email whoever you spoke with at the venue and ask for clarification.
