Concerned about dress sizing

Jennifer, on December 3, 2019 at 9:42 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 1 22
My dress at the bridal shop fit with a little wiggle room and clamped with may a few inches to spare. This was a size 12 and they ordered me a size 8 as they suggested this would fit perfectly. Well today I went to try on veils and the 12 barely fits due to a slight increase in glute size. I've reviewed the sizing chart for my designer and my hips have never been what a size 8 suggests and my bust far surpasses a size 8 and in fact puts me in a size 14. I am concerned on what I should do. The shop was less than friendly and told me to loose weight. My God I am a size 6, not sure what they expect. I am wondering if I should buy another dress with only 5 months to spare or pray to god I loose 5 inches in my butt alone. What would you do?

See if you can exchange the dress maybe? I have been told that it's easier to take a dress in than out. Plus your flutes not be as easy to go down. Maybe exchange for a different size?

I would either consult a seamstress or see about ordering another dress. That sounds like a tough position to be in because needing to lose weight to fit your dress almost pressures you more. You may also be able to talk to the salon and explain your concerna.

Not sure when you ordered it, but I would try to have them change it to the correct size. Bridal gown sizes are completely made up numbers, so what “size” you are in the gown is irrelevant. However the shop should never sell you a gown that all your measurements don’t fit into. Most have a policy not to no matter how much a bride insists they’re losing weight. Sample dresses are generally stretched out from being tried on and squeezed into. Don’t take up unhealthy habits to fit into a dress or a dress size.

I only ordered it two months ago. I looked at the photo and there wasn't much room to spare originally. I am trying to grasp why they would try to squeeze me in a dress two sizes smaller. I trusted that they would make the best decision but now I am not sure sure. I get that the two inches is my fault but for heavens sake, a woman can gain that during a period.

I did and they said there was nothing they could do, the dress is already being made. Their attitude was also an issue. Telling me that they don't make mistakes, they've done this for ten years...etc. I had a girl half my size telling me how to lose weight and what would work best. Last I checked, what works for a girl with clearly great metabolism probably won't work the same for me who has always struggled. I was thinking about buying a back up dress just to ease my stress, I just feel like I should have never been put in this position or a position where I am looking at dropping another chunk of money on a maybe dress.

They said I couldn't. Despite my two inches of gain, I feel like they did me dirty. Even if I would have stayed the same size, I still feel that I will struggle to fit.

Look at Azazie/Cocomelody and see if you can find a backup dress for a decent price. I totally see your point though- that was kind of a cruel thing for them to say. They may have been "doing this for years", but that doesn't mean you're comfortable with a guesstimate. You might also be able to find your dress on stillwhite.com or poshmark a size bigger. Honestly, no one should be expected to lose weight to fit a dress. What are we, models who never need to eat or want a burger?

Yea I thought their attitude was distasteful. I will look on there because I dont know of waiting is the best idea. The size they suggested may fit if I drop some weight but there would be no wiggle room. I thought bridal salons usually suggest you go up a size for Alterations and not a dress where no fluctuations can occur.

I agree with others that this is concerning. Sample dresses are usually very stretched out, so they are NOT a good indication of what size to order. Daughter tried her dress on in a size 8, with a good 4" clipped at the waist. They took her measurements and she was a perfect size 8 on the manufacturer's size chart, so despite our doubts that's what we ordered (her shop went over the numbers with her in comparison to the chart and made her sign-off on the choice of what was ordered). When her dress came in, it fit nearly perfect. Did they go over your measurements with you or did they just make a choice and tell you? Either way, given their attitude and the policies of most bridal salons, I agree you might want to start looking for a new dress. I'm so sorry....

Yeah, I'm pretty sure they are because it's always easier to take a dress in than it is to let a dress out. Another idea - can you try the same dress on at a different salon? I know some salons have exclusive designers, but maybe a different place can give you a better idea on the fit and not be so rude about it. Fitting into your dress sans losing weight is a legit concern.

Who makes your dress? I know a lot of the sizing varies from designer to designer. Go to a different shop and try the dress on again and see what size they'd recommend. If it's a 10, I'd say the first shop was probably right. If they recommend anything bigger, I'd say you were misguided and I'd raise hell. I'd also leave a review explain how you were treated when you went in with these concerns. That is absolutely unacceptable.

They did not go over the measurements and show me where I landed on the sizing chart. This is why I am even more upset. If I could have seen that I was pushing a size 10 then I would have absolutely went up in size for safety. They measured, told me the size and I trusted that they would guide me appropriately. My mistake! We called and told them that this wasn't okay and they said, "the dont tell brides what size to get because they dont like bringing up weight gain." What?! What about period bloat or sodium bloat? That alone could push me out of a size! I do plan on reviewing them after the dress comes in. I feel totally mislead and trying to start a new diet this close to a wedding is ridiculous.

Have them order you a new dress in the correct size. If they won't, get your money back and start looking for a new dress.

Definitely speak with a talented seamstress that specializes in wedding gowns. I'm so sorry they were so rude to you!! That is ridiculous!! Here's my story. Bought gown, size 10, a little too big, but that was ok. It took 11 months for my gown to arrive. One month after the dress arrived I became very ill and gained 50lbs in 14 days. Snide people said I needed to eat less. I explained it's not humanly possible to gain that much weight in 14 days just thru eating. So my gown is WAY too small. Went to my first fitting last week and she had all of these great ideas on how to make it larger without it looking like something was added. We are no where finished, but I honestly feel that I'll love my gown and not be self-conscious. I wish the same for you. I believe this bridal salon is bogus and needs to be turned into the BBB and negative Google reviews left. You were treated horribly. I wish you the best❤!!

They won't. Their contract states that they are not responsible and that we sign off on dress sizong... guess you can't trust your consultant though! Lesson learned I suppose. We called today and they say that they cant even make changes and the dress is still being made..frustrating. I feel like they are full of crap honestly.

Are you serious?! That's so unprofessional of them! I'm sorry girl! Shop sample sizes elsewhere (some places have sample sales), and then look at Azazie or Lulus. Best of luck!!

Thanks! I found a place having a sample sale this upcoming week! My goal is to get a more fun dress to wear. This way I can either change into it at the wedding OR save my own butt. Lol

You should insist on an exchange since they recommended that size for you. Sometimes if you give them a hard time, you might get your way.

But you have enough time to alter it.
I'm not sure if you want to settle with a cheaper dress for your big day
