Commitment ceremony

Ali, on June 19, 2020 at 9:22 AM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 5
So. We arent getting married (reasons but thats for another day), so we are having a commitment ceremony instead of a legal wedding. We are struggling with the wording and how to open the ceremony. A commitment ceremony is just like a wedding but not legal in any shape fo the word. We don't want a long drawn out thing (shoot, our vows are only like 4 sentences long lol) so "dearly beloved we are gathered here today..." is too formal and too much. We have googled our fingers off and just can't seem to find "it". You know it. THE it. Something short and sweet. But more than "hey guys! So here we are! Repeat after me ..." something along the lines of "hey yall, were here to celebrate a and d and their commitment to one another.....???????" But what else do we have our officiant (d's brother who is by no means anything official lol) say?

I searched “commitment ceremony script” on Pinterest and thought for this intro was pretty cute.

“Today is a celebration. A celebration of love, of commitment, of friendship, of family, of two people who are in it forever.”

Honestly some ceremonies are so short anyway or the typical ceremony is so short it won't actually feel dragged out.

but i would find a template and just edit it to your liking so that your officiant can go by that.

another thing is if you've got a quote about love or anything, that could work as the opening too

Hi Ali! I would keep it casual, with story-telling and a few favorite readings or quotes!

Your officiant can start off by saying why you're gathered here today, and a quick story about how you met or how your love has grown throughout your relationship. Then incorporate a favorite quote, one or two readings, your vows, and end on an affirmation and declaration of love! Smiley heart

Not every ceremony (legal or otherwise!) needs to start with a “gathered here today to witness their marriage”. Our ceremony started with our officiate thanking everyone for joining at a place special to us. This was the intro she used to then go into why it was important and to tell stories of our relationship. I would look into vow renewal scripts and “how to write your own ceremony” resources beyond just specifically commitment ceremonies to find what works for you. I liked some of the ceremony scripts on a website called offbeatbride and took some inspo from them.
