Colors for December?

We are having the hardest time deciding on an exact color palette. We don't want to do a christmas theme, and we don't want a "winter wonderland" feel either. Rather something cozy and rustic. Any ideas for bridesmaid dress colors? I've found some flower arrangements that I like but dresses are...

We're having a December wedding and our colors are navy blue and gold. Since you're doing rustic maybe a brown, cooper, gold color.

Congrats for thinking outside of the box. Not every December wedding has to be comprised of elements in bright red and vibrant greenery or shades of blue, silver, and white. If you want winter -- cozy and rustic, it's definitely possible. I'll lead you in the direction I'd lead a client if we were having our first conversation and they told me that they wanted cozy/rustic colors to dominate their winter wedding.

I tend to draw from mental images. Cozy/rustic to me is warm, comforting, rich, saturated, and natural. I would immediately think of a fire burning in the fireplace of a beautiful log home. I'd see lit candles everywhere -- so my first suggestion would be tones of gold or brass. That would refer to the golden glow from the fire. From there, I'd suggest a deep wheat color (not yellow -- that's far too spring/fall and far too loud -- something more like a base of cream with drops of yellow added to the mix). Next, I'd consider burnt umber (which includes shades of deep orange and deep red -- warm, saturated colors, not the bright pops of color usually reflected by the true oranges and reds found in autumn decor). Think of the light bouncing off of auburn hair, and you've got a starting point -- gold light, warm, rich browns, and all of it with a noticeable, but never in your face, undertone of red. I'd also consider burnt sienna (an earthy color best described as yellow/brown with a hint of red). Because I wouldn't want your scheme to look like refined autumn, I'd then cross over into the deep blue/green colors. Again, nothing pool liner, nothing teal, nothing "royal blue", and nothing icy or pastel...think of that dark blue/green color you see in the peacock's plume. That could be your pop, as could a rich eggplant or a true navy blue. Incorporate shades of green, but think of rich emerald shades, not frosty pale greens. Maybe the easiest way to explain it is to think of paint colors...add drops of black to deepen the colors.

A shot of pure black works with anything, and cream, whether it's the linen on the tables or the gown, is much warmer than pure white.

ETA: One of the greatest free and under utilized resources, when it comes to developing a color scheme, can be found at your local Home Depot or Lowe's. Go to the paint department and grab as many of those paint color cards as you can (keep them separated by brand). Take a bunch of them home and play with them. Whatever colors you combine, remember to keep your colors in a single line, meaning if you love the deeper colors featured in the fourth or fifth color down, choose the same fourth or fifth color from the other cards that you plan to use. That way, you'll get the hue and saturation right.
