Cocktail Style Reception Seating Question

Danielle, on December 5, 2019 at 12:10 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11
My fiancé and I are planning an evening cocktail style reception for our wedding. To give you an idea what we are going for, we are trying to emulate the feel of a brewery with several cocktail height small tables and no seating chart to encourage mingling. We plan to have a few regular height tables/chairs sprinkled throughout for those who require traditional seating. It is very important to us to have enough seats for every person. We had initially planned to rent primarily tall bar-height chairs with backs but it turns out those are fairly expensive to rent in our area. However, stools are much more affordable. Would it be unreasonable to provide stools with cocktail tables for most guests while still providing a few traditional tables for those who need them? I appreciate your feedback!

We are also having a cocktail style reception. I think mixing the tables and chairs is a great idea. I personally like sitting at counter height tables better than regular tables (I’m tall with bad knees, easier to sit in I suppose). Stools work just as well as backed bar stools. As long as there’s a seat for everyone, it will be fine. If you can, have some extra seating since there’s no seating chart and people won’t necessarily sit evenly dispersed.

I think mixing table & chair heights would be cool and good for guests. If you have any elderly guests (grandparents, etc) maybe reserve one or two tables and give them seat place cards to ensure they have a place to sit comfortably?

I like the cocktail style reception and i agree with having a few reserved seats/tables. But how long is your reception and what is the expected guest attire (You mentioned “brewery” so maybe it’s casual)? I ask because stools without backs are difficult in general. But they’d be even more difficult when wearing a dress or other dressed up attire. For the style you’re going for, does that mean finger foods? Or are you having a full “knife & fork” while seated on stools?

I love the idea of mixing the heights and tables! I don't think it's unreasonable at all. We are also accommodating our wedding for my FH's grandparents who are unable to sit in the white ceremony chairs that many have at their wedding b/c they are older and have trouble getting up from a seated position and moving around. We want to make sure that they are able to sit comfortably during our ceremony and at our reception (the reception chairs are traditional dinner chairs so they won't have an issue with those).

As a middle-aged guest who would much prefer a regular seat at a table, I'll add something else to consider. As a female guest, I'm going to have a purse (and perhaps a wrap) that I am going to want to set somewhere. With a chair with a back, I can hang both on the back of the chair. With a stool, I'm probably going to have to leave them on the table top, which will take up space on the table. Just something else to think about.

I think mixing is a good idea! some people will probably stand for most of it -and the ones that do sit will be fine with bar stool (or traditional seating). if you have one seat for every bottom then you will be just fine Smiley smile

Thank you for all the feedback! To answer a couple of questions, we are planning a few food stations as opposed to one buffet or a seated dinner. For coats and bags, we were toying with the idea of a coat check so it’s good to know that would be helpful. From what everyone has said it sounds like a mix of high and low tables is the way to go. We had originally planned for only a few low tables but I will look into expanding that so there are more traditional chair options while keeping the theme/feel of the event intact, and we will reserve a few for those who specifically require traditional seating. I am a firm believer in a seat for every bottom so that will be the first priority.

This sounds like an excellent plan! Seems like you’ve planned it out to get the look/style you want while keeping everyone’s comfort in mind. Well done. 😁

Have tables and chairs of some kind for everyone. Cocktail receptions are fun but no one likes to juggle a plate, a drink and try to eat at the same time. Even sitting in just a chair, you have to pray your drink doesn't get spilled on the floor or your plate knocked off your lap.
