Cocktail Hour

Miranda, on August 28, 2019 at 12:37 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 7

My fiance and I are getting married on a large farm. The ceremony will be held in an apple orchard and the reception is in a barn on the property. For the cocktail hour we wanted to have it under this pavilion in a garden on the property. The farm is so large and we want to try to take advantage of all the beautiful space. Because these spaces are a little further apart I think it would be difficult for our bartenders to drag everything needed for drinks during cocktail hour to the pavilion and then back to the barn for the reception (it's an old barn and we need everything, including coolers filled with ice). We plan to have a few types of beer and some mixed drinks for the reception. So I was wondering if it would be a good idea for the cocktail hour to do maybe a special drink for the cocktail hour like an apple sangria since we are getting married in the apple orchard. And just have light snacks of cheese, meat and cracker trays. Our cocktail hour isn't long and dinner will be served right after at the start of the reception after introductions, so we didn't want anything too heavy. Would this be a good or bad idea?

I think that'd be totally fine. A pitcher of a signature cocktail and a pitcher of water should cover everyone. Our bartender recommended doing batch signature cocktails for the cocktail hour because they said pretty much everyone will want to try the signature cocktail(s) first, and it's easier to just have them ready, and that's basically what you'd be doing!

That sounds fine to me. Maybe add a veggie platter for those that don't want to eat meat?

I think that sounds fun. And my sons wedding they had a similar situation where there venue was really spread out and the bartender set up two bars and we just split the alcohol between each location and then had someone from the venue bring up everything after the cocktail hour up to the reception as back up when needed so that might also be an option.

Sounds like a great idea! It would also be a way to make your cocktail hour stand out from the rest of the reception!

They should have separate stations of alcohol if that's what you want that doesn't require moving things. Cocktail hour by the garden sounds very nice and it's okay to have some beer selections and a specialty cocktail to be served. I would ask them this. My venue will have 3 bars set up sooo they obviously need each stocked with the appropriate things without having to move stuff.
