We're having a cheese and cracker display along with several passed hors d'oeuvres. I haven't finalized them, but it will likely be things like mini crab cakes, bacon wrapped scallops, and something vegetarian like mini quiches or spanikopita or caprese salad on a stick (mozzarella, basil, cherry tomato).

I know we get to choose 2 display appetizers (cheese and crackers, fruit, bruchetta...that kind of thing) and 6 butlered apps. We haven't made any choices, yet, but there's things similar to what @GrumpyCatRebecca mentioned on the list of possibilities for the butlered apps. The one FH is particularly interested in is the mini beef wellingtons.

We're also having passed hors d'oeuvres and I'm SO excited about them (I love food lol). We're having mini crab cakes with lime aioli, firecracker beef spring rolls with lime creme fraiche, and vegetable spring rolls with Asian dipping sauce. We're also going to provide bags of goldfish/pretzels in my nephews'/niece's "kid kits" because they definitely won't be interested in eating the passed hors d'oeuvres!

We have a fruit/veggie/cheese display and our choice of 3 passed appetizers. One is going to be Peking ravioli because went to a bridal show at our venue and they were absolutely delicious. The other two we haven't picked yet!

We're having chips and salsa. My mom suggested having a salsa bar with several different kinds, and I love that idea! We're planning on having dinner as soon as we're done with pictures, so we didn't want anything too heavy.

We've been to a few cocktail hours, and half hours, where the food offerings were not commensurate with the open bar.

For example, my family was invited to a wedding that only offered 3 passed hors d'oeuvres and by the time they got around to serving us, we were only offered one type. I don't know if people grabbed two of each, or what happened? Anyway, my sister was on her 2nd and final glass of wine, for the evening, when she realized there was nothing to eat; the one we were offered was made of pork, and she doesn't eat it. Not good, for your health ...

We offered 7 types of passed/butlered hors d'oeuvres (i.e. 1 was shrimp cocktail), and there was also a cold food buffet, including domestic/imported cheese, fresh/roasted vegetables with dip, petite sliced French bread and crackers, and a fruit tower - photo attached.

Props to you for hosting an open bar! That's fantastic. As far as apps for your cocktail hour, I've been to plenty of weddings with open bars, and the apps are generally delicious. I've been to cocktails hours with apps that are so varied and plentiful at buffet stations that they topped dinner, and I've been to weddings where the apps, although delicious, were passed and not quite as plentiful (although it was enough to hold everyone over until dinner).

For the passed apps, I've been offered fresh fruit skewers, chicken skewers, domestic and imported cheeses, all kinds of shrimp (which I don't eat), Bruschetta and Crostini, Spring Rolls, Swedish Meat Balls, various meat combos on a skewer, and even sushi. There are plenty more, but I can't remember them off hand. I do remember the cocktail hour with buffet stations, and it included everything from carving stations to Chinese Food to Italian Food to soups, seafood, and just about anything you could imagine.

I've never been offered nachos, chips, pretzels, or snacks you can buy in a bag.

My opinion is that the priority is the bar. Host an open bar and a few apps and your guests will be ready to party by the time your reception starts.

We are having a trail mix bar, to tie in to our "camp" theme. The main focus is the open bar, though!

Give me that salsa bar. Sounds so good!

We're doing a live action. Sushi station and 3 passed apps: mini Philly cheesesteaks, bacon wrapped scallops and mini tacos with Margarita shots. I saw that one on Pinterest and had to have them!
