Cocktail hour music?

What are you guys doing? Is it absolutely necessary? We don't have money in the budget to hire the DJ to start earlier (extra $250). I could negotiate with the ceremony musician to stay later, but he's a pianist and there's no piano in the cocktail hour space, so we'd have to transport a keyboard,...

We don't have money in the budget to hire the DJ to start earlier (extra $250). I could negotiate with the ceremony musician to stay later, but he's a pianist and there's no piano in the cocktail hour space, so we'd have to transport a keyboard, etc. I'd rather not hire yet another person to do something. I'm also not sure if there's an appropriate sound system to set up even if we wanted to play music.

Suggestions? Or are we okay without?

There are a ton online with great prices! I would get a multi-piece one so you can spread them out!

I just googled and found these: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/logitech-z506-5-1-surround-sound-speakers-6-piece-black/1215025.p?id=1218236333141&skuId=1215025

Lauren, how many would I need? 2-4? I mean, I guess I'd want to stay under $30 a piece if I'm buying multiple, unless that's shit quality. I really have no idea what these cost.

Our DJ had a portable set he could use for cocktail hour and then his main one was in the room for the reception.

We played music that was like Frank Sinatra and went along with that flow/feeling.

Oh yea the Bose is expensive... you don't need the music to be super loud anyway so I don't think quality is that big of a deal. You just need something in the background.

ETA- I think 2-4 is perfect.

I'm DIYing all our music -- just grabbing songs I already have and some other stuff off Youtube, sticking to upbeat, not-too-attention-grabbing music that isn't particularly danceable. Our venue has a sound system, but in the event we can't use it for whatever reason I have a little portable speaker I use for dance practice that should serve just fine, because our venue's pretty small. I've been putting my playlists up on 8tracks as an extra backup, here's my cocktail hour.

Thanks, everyone. I'll see what the pianist says, but maybe we'll just go the speaker/playlist route. He had his own radio shows during college and loves making mix CDs, so a playlist shouldn't be an issue. Maybe it'll even keep him from trying to micromanage the DJ. Smiley smile
