Cocktail hour food

Andrea, on July 14, 2019 at 2:17 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 36
Our cocktail hour right now will include 4 passed appetizers. I’m worried that’s not enough food. I would like to add a grazing table too with cheese, meats, veggies etc etc. My fiancé thinks we absolutely don’t need that. We are paying for the wedding ourselves and live in the Chicagoland area so nothing is cheap. I keep wanting to add more and more and it is very hard to decide what items to insist on and what are really unnecessary. What are you guys doing for cocktail hour food?

We are having 3 passed apps for 80 people. I think it will be fine as long as you are having alcohol during cocktail hour!

Thanks Mary! Yeah we’ve got an open bar, and about 100 people. I think I’m just starting to second guess everything 😬

My caterer does 5 passed apps, which he said for our guest list of 65-70 people will be a LOT. So 4 for 100 people with open bar sounds good to me

How long is the wedding? How long is the cocktail hour?
On “Four Weddings” the lack of food during cocktail hour is ALWAYS at the top of a low score! Lack of food, cold food, and too few options too the list- as well as not enough servers or long lines.

Just think about events or weddings you've been to and what you've eaten. Me personally I've never really eaten off those cheese, meat, veggie tables and they have always looked pretty full. I'd say skip it.

We had 4 passed apps as well and it was plenty. Cocktail hour isn’t very long and people are mingling and getting a drink so they don’t need too much food right before dinner. You will be fine.

We are having 3 passed apps for over 100 guests along with the bar opening, what matters more is that you have enough of each appetizer that everyone can have at least 1

When I first read this I thought that’s not enough. The grazing table sounded amazing but I’m soooo greedy so that may be why lol. I’m having an insane amount of food at my cocktail hour and throughout the reception mainly because I love to eat and I want something for everyone. My crowd is also big eaters. We are having 6 passed apps and 4 stations at cocktail hour.

I think a grazing table is a great idea but you won’t need to do “per person.” For example, if you have 100 guests, a meat & cheese & cracker platter for 25-30 guests should be fine because some guests won’t eat until dinner. Would your fiancé be ok if you cut one app & reallocated that budget to help with the appetizer table. Passed apps are good but some guests might not get any.

I dont think you can ever go wrong adding more food/beverage. That's what people will remember. Adding decor, gift bags, flowers, etc are nice, but people wont be upset if that's not there. They will however remember if you dont have enough to eat.

We are having a station (cheese, fruit and crackers with dip) and 2 passed apps (mini roast beef sliders, and loaded baked potato tots). We have 130 people. Our venue says they make enough so each person will get at least a few bites of each app and if they need to make more, they just make more!

I think what you are offering is plenty!

We originally planned on 3 passed or 2 passed and a fruit station. Which I think is plenty.

Now we changed our menu to include a pasta bar (on top of the regular lunch menu of beef, chicken, potatoes, veggies & salad). I’m contemplating having only fruit as the app. It is a lunch wedding so I think its plenty.

We’re getting married at 5:30, serving cocktails upon arrival, planning on the ceremony being 20-25 mins and then the cocktail hour for just an hour. 4 passed apps with an open bar the entire evening. 3 course dinner and a late late snack, wedding is over at 11:30pm
