Cocktail Hour Apps

Morgan, on February 11, 2020 at 10:30 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 14

Hello!

Searching for some insights from other brides who may have done, or are planning something similar. We intend to serve an actual sit down dinner, however I’m struggling with the idea of what to do for cocktail hour. I love the idea of doing a grazing table, but I’m not sure how much or how big to go. Our guest list sits around 150, at the moment.
I wanted to have the table set just for cocktail hour - so people can snack as they get their first couple of beverages. Every website I’ve seen has made it seem as if I need to supply enough for each person to have a a full meals worth. I don’t want everyone to fill up on cheese and crackers, I’m just trying to offer up something supplemental.
Would it be okay to choose a table that would feed a lesser amount? Let me know your thoughts or if you are planning something similar. thanks in advance!

I do think that's fine. I think websites just want you to have more so that you're accounting for everyone and then some. But I know for instance when I did my candy bar table I definitely got way less candy than suggested and even then I ended up with a lot left over

Have you asked your caterer what they recommend?

Absolutely! We did this. We had a meat, cheese, grapes & bread/cracker display for 1/2 the guests and it looked like there was still some left. Ask your caterer but maybe a display for 1/3 the guests?

Usually the average is 3-4 pieces per person for an hour. But if your talking shrimp, more. For 150 people you need more than one table as it will be crowded. Also keep in mind, by the time guests are seated, intro, toast any of that people will be hungry.

We did this! We had a sit down meal for dinner and for cocktail hour, we set up a table with a cheese, cracker, fruit, charcuterie, breaks, and oils (we got married on a vineyard so this was very appropriate for us lol). It worked out great and our guests actually talked about how much they enjoyed the spread. So I think you have a great plan.

Oh, and we had 100 guests.

We had four passed appetizers and one stationary appetizer, it worked out super well!

Our venue is actually a winery, so similar situations! You said you had 100 guests? Did you base the amount of food for your table on enough to feed 100, or did you cut back a bit being as the table was just for apps?

This is a great question, and sadly, I don't know the answer. Our planner took care of this with catering. So definitely talk to your caterer, and planner if you have one! I do know we agreed to have the table refilled, as needed, up until about 15 minutes before the end of cocktail hour.

We will have a month of coordinator, and I’m sure it could all be handled through her. We just booked the venue on Sunday so haven’t gotten that far yet. A grazing table is just something I really wanted but when I saw pricing on one for our group size I was a little taken-a-back! But thank you for your feedback!

I prefer grazing tables because it allows guests to go get exactly what they want, when they want it. At so many weddings there are passed hors d'oeuvres that get missed because that tray doesn't make it over to certain groups of guests. All of our apps were eaten, so we wasted zero money, which I appreciated!

You're welcome, and good luck with all your planning Smiley smile

I'm in the same boat with you. I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to NOT do a cocktail hour all together. It's $6 per person! That just seems so expensive! gaahh!!

No one needs so much food that they dont have room for dinner. Cheese and fruit trays will be fine to tide guests over.
