Cocktail Hour Apps

Christine, on September 6, 2021 at 8:01 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8

Hi everyone!

My fiancé and I were discussing what we should have for our cocktail hour in regards to food. My family friend is catering our wedding with BBQ since he has a local BBQ service where we live (he's been catering events for a while). However, since he's not too big of a business I didn't want to ask him about any appetizers until I had researched other options.

I was wondering if anyone has any ideas for food to have during cocktail hour. We were thinking something simple like Costco sandwiches and maybe meat and cheese platters with crackers. Or should we get actual appetizers from chain restaurants or grocery stores. The venue really lets us do whatever we want so theres a good amount of freedom we have. We are also going to have some servers for 4 hours that day so they will be there for cocktail hour (my family insisted on getting servers because they didn't want to be cleaning up and serving people that day lol).

Any ideas on which restaurants or stores??

I think the idea of platters would be good, but maybe like fruit, vegetables and cheese platters with crackers. Since you're having a heavy dinner with BBQ I wouldn't go all out on appetizers.

Costco has a ton of heat and serve appetizers. Or you can get them all carte from a local caterer inexpensively.

If you are serving bbq as your main meal, I would stay away from sandwiches on the appetizer menu. Also go pretty light with the appetizers: cheese and crackers tray, spanakopita, etc.

Don't know if you have Sam's Club where you live, but we got our cheese trays, little pinwheel sandwiches, fruit trays, hummus, etc all there premade for very affordable!

I wouldn’t recommend sandwiches— too filling. Small and simple is your best bet pre dinner. Fruit, cheese and crackers are great. We had a station which was veggies and chip varieties and a couple different types of dips, and that was a big hit. Light and simple. I think we had a hummus, an onion dip, a Buffalo chicken dip, and a crab dip. Passed apps can be fun but aren’t necessary, but you do have the servers … for that I think warmed bite sized things are best (think pigs in a blanket, mini quiches, coconut shrimp) trying to think what goes with bbq…Mac and cheese bites ? Something bacon wrapped? Hah. But sticking to just cold platters is totally fine , and those are easy to get premade !

Do a "grazing table". They're basically like a giant charcuterie board. People can serve themselves! We are having BBQ catering and a grazing table for cocktail hour at our upcoming wedding. Although I am having the caterer take care of this as well. Costco or Sam's Club are great places to buy the items you might need. Good luck!
