Cocktail Hour and amount of canapes per guest, help please!

Bally, on November 13, 2011 at 5:27 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

Hi again ladies,

I still haven't found the dress but will keep you posted with that!

Now I am organizing the reception drinks right after the ceremony (while the pics are being taken). It will last approx 1 hour and a half and we will serve 2 sparkling wines per guest and some canapes. We also hired a harpist to be playing during that time.

Now my question is, the canapes suggested by my venue are 5 per guest for that hour and 1/2. But they are very expensive (£5.50 per guest) so I wanted to give 3 canapes (£3.30 per guest) to save some money on it. Do you think that 3 canapes for 1 hour and a half is too little? I dont want them to get full before the wedding breaksfast but I dont want to them to starve or look cheap either. What do you think? 3 canapes for 1 hour and a half??

I was thinking on offering nibbles instead canapes but the difference in price is not very big so I prefer to offer 3 canapes instead.

Thanks!!!!

Couldn't you offer something in addition? Maybe 2 canapes and an assortment of danishes or something? Just a thought.

Depends on the time of day. If it's in the morning, why not go with some fruit, danishe and muffins and sparking wine? Three canapes for an hour and a half is not enough. I'm sure some of these people will come without any breakfast at all, and they will be just famished by the time the breakfast starts.

In case 3 canapes were to little, I was planning to serve also an assortment of crudities (celery + carrot sticks) wih dips and some nuts and crisps.. But again, the price would increase.. So I dont know if its better then just to go for 4 canapes rather than 3?

I agree... 3 isn't enough. What about adding a cheese spread?

The ceremony starts at 2.30pm, the drinks would start at 3 more or less and the wedding breakfast would be at 4.30pm approx... What about 4 canapes? Would you be dissapointed with 4 canapes and 2 sparkling dwines for 1 hour and a half? Thanks!

I'd have to agree w/ the venue's suggestion. If you only do 3 per person, you'll run out of food rather quickly. Keep in mind - no one will take just *their* 3. A fruit tray or veggie crudite tray would help provide enough food w/o busting the budget - those typically are pretty cost-effective and have enough to add to your canapes.

Thanks so much for your insight, you are right!

    So the options are:

    1) Nibbles ONLY including: variety of nuts, crisps, crudities, crackers, breadsticks, dips AND OLIVES = £3.75

    2) Nibbles ONLY including: variety of nuts, crisps, crudities, crackers, breadsticks, dips AND a small variety of cheese = £3.75

    3) 3 canapes served + variety of nuts, crisps, crudities, crackers, breadsticks, dips.

    4) Or only 4 canapes...

Which one would you prefer if you were a guest?

    Thanks ladies Smiley smile

Starving people, really.....You figure that to get there on time, they need to be dressed and on the road by lunchtime; by 4:30 they'll be eating each other.....

I'm thinking about my partner, and I know at that time of day, he'd eat about a family's worth, lol....no one knows how many they are 'supposed to have".

I think probably #3 is my favorite idea....

Awww thanks a lot! I think I will go for that one really. I was thinking with the head rather than the heart before.. At the end of the day its a celebration, the least I'd like is for people not to enjoy... Thanks for the advise really! Smiley smile

I would say that 3 is too few, per person. Also, make sure that you include some protein, such as cheese or nuts. Some people cannot do "sweets" as the only food source. Especially for an hour and a half.
