Cocktail Hour Activities?

Brittany, on August 14, 2019 at 9:38 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 13
Are you supposed to provide activities for people to do during cocktail hour? Ours shouldn't be longer than 60 minutes and we will have appetizers and alcohol available for everyone, but I'm wondering if people are going to get bored.

Nope! The purpose of cocktail hour is for people to mingle, eat, and drink. You don't need to provide games or anything. As long as you have some nice, ambient cocktail music and good appetizers and drinks, that's all you need.

Personally, food and drinks are enough to keep me occupied. Maybe add a photo booth with some funny props for people to take pictures

I think most people know what to expect at cocktail hour so I wouldn't worry about it! I usually use that time to have a drink, eat a few apps, and look for a nice location to take pictures. I think a lot of people do the same.

I didn’t provide any activities. I had a live saxophonist playing as well as appetizers and drinks. Our venue had a nice view and our ceremony was transform into a photobooth with the arc so people were chatting around and taking pictures. I didn’t feel the need to do any activities.

I've been to several wedding where they have yard games for people during happy hour (giant jenga, cornhole, etc). We'll start our photobooth during the cocktail hour, but I'm also having corn hole and yardzee to keep people entertained (I may buy stuff for giant jenga as well).

We had yard games, then guests could sign our guest book or use our photo booth. I don't think it's necessary though, people have fun mingling and eating & drinking!

We will be asking for an unplugged ceremony. So to make up for that and to keep people engaged (ha!) and having fun, we created an Photo Scavenger Hunt and will ask them to use our hashtag when they post pics. So the added bonus is that we will get to see our wedding from the perspective of the attendees AND a whole buncha fun pics

    * A selfie with the Maid of Honor * A pic of groom's father smiling * Table selfie * Pic of your favorite shoes at the wedding * Best dance moves on the floor * Sparkly jewelry * fave decoration * Cutest couple (aside from the 'just married')... etc...*

I think you're totally fine to do nothing other than provide drinks and some bites to eat. We're getting married in a distillery, so we're going to give our guests the option to go on a quick tour.

No, most people socialize. Some dob’t make it for the entire hour. Others eat/drink a lot.
