CNAs and Nurses Reply Here Please (Doctors are welcomed too)

Jayden'sMom, on December 15, 2010 at 8:15 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

I am training to be a CNA at a nursing home. One thing is alot of handwashing being done! I am wondering how many of you take or took off your engagement ring and/or wedding ring for the duration of your shift to keep the ring pretty or from losing it?

I realize I won't be washing my hands every 30 seconds or putting on gloves that often either but I really do not want to risk the ring being damaged or hurting someone. Or am I just overthinking things? I am only 2 days into training.

I never take mine off but I purposely told hubby to buy one that is doesn't sit high because I knew otherwise it would get stuck on the gloves and could possibly come off. I wash my hands a lot but if anything my hands get pretty dry because of all the washing.

I take mine off at work when I wash my hands, mostly because I don't like the feeling of the wetness under the band. After I dry my hands, I put it back on. I feel too weird if I'm out in public without wearing my ring, so no way I could go an entire shift without wearing it! Depending on what size it is, you need to be careful around your patients. It's easy to accidentally scratch them with your ring when you are helping them with their ADL's.

I always leave mine on, mostly because I know that one day I'll have to rush through washing my hands and leave the ring at the sink. Kristen is right though, you will need to be careful about your ring scratching patients, but gloves do a good job of protecting both you and the patient. And just remember, accidents do happen, and you will probably have to clean feces out of your ring at least once, among other substances and body fluids...

I have to take mine off to scrub for the OR. I can wear them on a chain while working, but I do worry about losing things if I change necklace to finger all the time or while changing clothes (Not into patients, just to clarify). I got a chain I think is very secure and I tend to put it on the chain and leave it there all day.

Will September2011, I have been a CNA for the last two years in the hospital by my house and I never take my ring to work with me because you really can easily can lose your ring. Trust me I almost did like twice, so I just stopped working it there.

I'm not a nurse, but as a dental hygienist I wash my hands between patients and wear latex gloves all day. I leave my ring on and the only problem I have is scratching myself while washing. I usually rip at least two gloves a day while putting them over my ring. I just put a new one on.

I wear my ring to work. I specified to my FH that i needed something that didn't sit to high up so it wouldn't tear the gloves. I have seen some girls put their ring on a necklace while at work....i also know some who don't wear their rings at work. but most of them wear only a band (but I'm not there yet!)

I'm an x-ray technologist and I do not wear my ring at work at all. It happened to be that he got a ring from his mom and had it dipped in white gold and if I wear it too much, esp at work, it starts to fade and get icky. Plus I work with some gross stuff so I'd rather not have it on. I am planning on buying a "cheaper" band thats not dipped to wear at work once I'm married.

After we get married, I will just wear my wedding band. My E ring doesn't fit under gloves and it could hurt someone [FH is the victim in that situation lol]

I don't wear my e-ring to work because I have torn an elderly ladies skin before and it was the worst feeling in life. As you know there skin is very fragile and anything can cause a skin tear. Washing my hands and the gloves were not that big of deal to me because I would just put the ring in my pocket. I plan on just wearing my wedding band at work once we wed.

I take mine off. I work in a doctors office and the only time I take it off is to wash my hands, UNLESS I am in the lab drawing blood. If I know thats the case, I put my ring on my very best friends hand (shes a secretary at work).

I wear a really thin necklace and if the washing of hands and gloves starts to irritate me, I put it on my necklace. But, I try not to take it off at all.

I don't take mine off for work. It doesn't seem to get in the way really. When I'm in my clinical rotations for school I take it off for sterile skills just in case it pokes through the gloves!

Not in the same profession but i also wash my hands a million times a day and when i am doing facials i put it on my necklace or if i am having a busy day. mine seems to be a water trap so it is easier to not wear it. i have scratched myself a million times and dont want to scratch a client.
