Closing open bar

We are having a semi-open bar I guess. We are having a semi-open bar I guess. In our reception package our venue coordinator quoted us for wine only for 2 hours which is long enough for cocktail hour and dinner and then they would close the bar. I personally think 2 hours is long enough but I was thinking some of our guests may want wine later, but I don’t know about taking on the cost of keeping the bar open for maybe a handful of people. She suggested that it could be a cash bar after dinner, but I don’t want to be inconsiderate to our guests. In all honesty we weren’t going to offer alcohol at all since my fiancé and I and our families aren’t don’t really drink. But since our venue is a winery we wanted to at least offer wine. So from a guest perspective is it better to close the bar and be done, or have it be a cash bar after dinner?

Yes -- I don't see why this wouldn't be an option? I think this is the best choice.

For your crowd, creating your own consumption bar essentially seems the most fiscally sensible.

I think more clear communication with your venue is in order.

Because ouch, $45 per person? That's a lot for just wine. Admittedly, if they're an upscale wine place and they only serve their own wine I guess I could understand that.

I think it's crazy that they're not willing to do a consumption bar to be fair.

I will definitely ask about picking up the tab after dinner. I think if I phrase it that way it will be accepted. As long as they’re getting paid it shouldn’t matter from who.

That's a really good idea. See if you could basically open a tab with the bar so the drinks get changed to your card or whatever. That way you only get charged for what people drink and you won't have to close the bar after dinner.

I was thinking this too. I don't see why the venue would have a problem with it, if anything they'd make more money because people would drink more.

Why is it not an option? All it means is that you pay for any drinks ordered after the 2 hours, not the individual guests. There's no logical reason you can't give the venue your credit card and have them put the guests' additional drinks on your tab.
