Classy/sweet way to do the garter toss?

Nicoletta, on June 22, 2014 at 1:17 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4

At first I was against doing the garter toss because I thought it was silly ( my FH is also not hot about the idea), but now that I am getting closer to the wedding, I am deciding I may want to do it for traditon's sake ( it's a pretty old traditon) and we are having a vintage/1920's themed wedding. Is there anyway classy or sweet way to do the garter toss so I can keep traditon alive without making us look like fools?

What part are you having an issue with? Having him take it off you in front of everyone? Or the actual tossing of the garter/bouquet?

Maybe you could have bowls available for single guests to put their name in (one for males, one for females) and draw them? This way you don't have to actually toss it.

If you don't want to expose your leg, you could just have FH take the garter off with the dress down as much as possible, which I've seen. Or you could have an extra garter set someplace to pick up when it's time.

I think I saw someone on here that was doing a traditional toss but then it could be for all men and all women (not just the single people so they don't feel "singled" out haha). Then whoever catches it gets a bottle of wine. I've seen guys also put the garter on a football then toss a football so if you can come up with some other thing other than a football that could be cute (I don't have any ideas off the top of my head though).

I'm still not sure on whether I want to do this tradition or not, either. I was looking for songs for the reception last week (for FH and his mom, cake cutting, etc.) and decided that if I do decide to do this we'll play "She's a lady" by Tom Jones... try to keep it as "classy" as possible, right?

Some people put the garter down on their leg when it is time like below the knee so your dress isn't so far up.
