Clash of the styles!

Tiffany, on February 8, 2022 at 8:44 AM Posted in Planning 2 12

Hello, We are having a issue with deciding the OVER ALL style of our wedding in June 2024! I love Elligent and Formal with a touch of Rustic and he likes Simple, Romantic and Formal. He doesn't like Rustic at all!

Why don't you just take what you both love. You both said Formal. Elegant is close to formal. Simple and rustic can be similar depending on what you do. What ideas were you thinking for rustic? Maybe you could incorporate both romantic and rustic. Or just do a formal and elegant wedding.

I would try to stick with the things you both like, like Formal, Elegant and Romantic (because those can all go together). Maybe your bridal shower or bachelorette can be more rustic themed. There are a ton of venues in various price ranges that don't have to be rustic, and country music in itself doesn't have to mean rustic either. We're getting married in a barn venue and are kind of stuck with country music for certain things because otherwise we just listen to rock, and aren't choosing a rustic theme at all. You guys will have to find a way to compromise, because that's what you'll need to be doing for the rest of your lives as a married couple. Now is a great time to practice.

You could add the rustic into your centerpieces. Some of these are extra, but I think they gave a good assortment for highs, lows, color, and greens: Tree centerpieces

You could also go modern as well as diy:

I would do a formal and elegant venue and use romantic decorations for the ceremony and then incorporate some rustic elements into your reception like country music. Maybe you switch from heels to boots. Maybe your dinner menu could be more rustic.

I was in a similar boat with my FH. See which textures or materials you like that are used in a given style and if there are ANY you can agree on. Think about your colors, season, which metallic accent you want, and if that pairs with dark or light wood.

If all else fails, try and both create a mood board and then the other person can look through to see which elements they can agree on. Pinterest is really, really good for this.
For us the primary dispute was rustic vs modern (we both like romantic and some classic). We figured out that my FH hated the twine and burlap elements of rustic but he was just fine including distressed wood and string lights. I also compromised to include some of the more modern and minimalist details that he prefers but I vetoed square plates.
Good luck! I hope this helped.

Aw. I'm glad. Best of luck to you both! This is definitely an exercise in clear communication and patience but it pays off.
