Civil Marriage before Church Ceremony?

Frances, on March 11, 2013 at 10:59 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 4

Well, FH is in the Marine Corps: and when duty calls he (we) answer.

There is a possibility of his orders being moved up, complicating our plans for a September 2013 wedding. I see that we have two options:

1) Keep our original 09/07/2013 plans in Michigan, and get a priest to marry us in the Church but with only us two. Then we can be given the marriage sacrament, and come back to Michigan (hoping he can get weekend leave) for our "public" church vow exchange and reception.

2) Cut our losses for our September wedding, get a civil marriage before he is re-stationed so we can be married in the eyes of the military (around April) and then have a Church wedding and reception in Virginia where he will be stationed (and I will then move to).

Military/Catholic/Creative brides....any ideas? input? etc?

I think it all depends on what feels right for the two of you. FH and I are both Catholic but are choosing to get married at our venue instead. Sometime after our wedding we are getting our marriage blessed in the church. I would say that if the church wedding is really important to the both of you then go with option 1. But if that isn't as important as just getting married, go with option 2. Hope this helps!

Being near Wright Patt Air Force Base I do quite a few civil bride and groom marriages. This way they get all of the military benefits and can have the "real wedding" for the family anytime.

They never know when they are going to get called away and it protects you and gives you the spouse benefits if the September wedding doesn't pan out.

I'd wait to get married in the Church. You really only get one wedding; after that, you're just renewing your vows and pretending to get married. Guests want to come to your actual marriage and see it happen, not watch you guys act like you're getting married.
