Civil Ceremony or Elope?

Hi everyone (esp COVID brides!)

My original wedding date was June 20, 2020. We decided to postpone our religious ceremony/big reception to next year and keep the date this year for a small civil wedding. I live in the NJ/NY area, so it's been more hectic here.
Originally, we were thinking about having a 50 person, 20-30 person, or 10 person celebration depending on what the government would allow. We thought things would start to look better in NJ by now, but it doesn't seem like it will be any time soon.
Now I'm afraid that even a 20 person gathering would put our family and friends at risk (especially because my fiance's brother would be traveling from Vegas, parents and friends with chronic conditions, etc).
Should we just elope to be safest? What are you all doing?

We are in TN so places are starting to open back up starting May 1 here. We are just having a small ceremony on May 5 with both our parents, MOH and Best Man, officiant, photographer and violinist. But the ceremony will be held outside so those who wish to distance themselves can. Then we plan to have everyone over afterwards for tacos and margs since it’s also Cinco de Mayo! We are staying around 10 people and everyone is comfortable with that, and anyone who wishes to wear a mask can of course. I’m still wearing my dress and the whole shebang! We didn’t want to postpone, we are just ready to be married and move forward with our lives at this point! Honestly I’m excited! Fingers crossed for no rain though! 🙏🏼

My date is June 20 as well. We are planning a 10 or 20 person ceremony on that day, depending on what is allowed by the government (Ohio). The big wedding (ceremony and reception) is postponed to August, although unsure if we will stick with that (probably will, if we can have at least 50 guests), or do a vow renewal next year.

    Hi Maryann,

I'm so sorry you are going through this. It is really so hard to say what the remainder of the year will look like. But, I am loving the suggestions above. I would either keep it very small - parents only! Or, you could elope and share photos from that event at your reception next year, or even later this year.

I know you and your partner will do what is best for you!

Sending lots of love your way!

    Smiley heart
