City Hall date blacked out...

SoonToBeKADC, on July 22, 2019 at 12:40 AM Posted in Planning 0 10

My FH and I went to make a reservation for our wedding at the city hall in town but we found out that it's a blackout date (assuming because Halloween is the week after). We just don't want to change our date at all because the date has a specific meaning. Now, we don't know what to do. Also, our wedding date is on a Thursday... Can someone explain to me the whole officiant thing? Do I find one and find a venue to get married at and go from there? I'm so devastated.

Depending on where you live there may even be quick chapel and officiant services.

See, the problem is my FH and I do not want to do a wedding anywhere near a church / chapel for personal preferences (mostly for we both aren't religious and find doing this would be disrespectful).

It is pretty close to the date. I am not sure if a venue will be open. Maybe hire a officiant and go to a park. Or do it in your own home.

What about looking into the next city hall over from where you live and see if they have your dates available or look online for places in your state to do a quick elopement or a sign and exchange rings type services if you don't want to do the whole wedding thing

What state are you in? In most, you can do it anywhere in the state. So if your city hall is not doing ceremonies a particular day, check others. Friends of mine in Boston ran into this, where Boston offices and all city functions close on St. Patrick's day, because it is also the holiday for the British soldiers leaving (Evacuation day) in revolutionary days. But not all counties celebrate that. Check other cities and towns .

I wouldn’t assume it’s because Halloween. I’d assume it is because there isn’t anyone available to perform weddings that day. Can you see if another city hall nearby is available that day? As Judith mentioned, this will really vary by city. In the city I live in, there are often black out days because the judges sit on cases too and if some are on vacation, there isn’t always one available to do marriages.

Check surrounding cities, they might just be full! You can get an officiant and do it in a park or your house and it'll be roughly the same idea. Make sure to check out how many days in advanced you need to file before getting the lisence

I concur with a PP who said to look into wedding chapels. We were originally looking at a city hall wedding, but we had too many people. So instead we found a small 'wedding chapel.' It was non-religious/affiliated chapel (think a traditional/modern aesthetic to a version of a Vegas-style elopement). The officiant is typically built into the pricing and you still get the intimate 15 minute ceremony. This was the one we went to.

Look into elopement packages in your area, these are usually held at bed & breakfast inns. They typically have nice gardens as your ceremony space and take all the guesswork out of finding an officiant.

You can have a friend or family member get "ordained" but just check if it's legal in your area. Basically they submit paperwork online one site is universal life church or church of latter day dude...
