Cicadas....

Jenn, on March 9, 2021 at 10:16 AM Posted in Planning 0 27
Some of you may have heard by now (I found out through a post on WW) that the cicadas are coming out full force this year in May. Those that aren't aware, gazillllllionnnns of cicadas come out from the ground every 17 years when the soil hits 64 degrees. They come out and attach themselves to branches, mate, lay eggs and then go away by 6 weeks. It happens in about 15 states with Kentucky being one of them, which is where we will be getting married. Outside. In the woods 😂😂😂

I've already spoken to my DOC, my photographers and videographers and I've mentally come to terms with all the dead cicada bodies and the deafening sound they will make through our vows lol. I understand they aren't harmful in any way, but billions of cicadas wasn't something that I had prepared for LOL.

I've been told there really isn't anything you can do with cicadas, especially when there will be so many of them.... but.... I just wanted to know if any of you guys have planned anything for it? Like has any of your venues come up with a game plan that you guys can share with me? Thank you!

They’re not supposed to come back until 2024. The last time they were out (at least in IL) was 2007. Still have 3 more years.

I think there are different cycles for different types. In our area we are expected the loud gross ones. I remember the last time when my daughter was younger she came to my room one night crying “I HATE THE CICADAS MOM I CAN’T SLEEP!”
Now that she’s grown I’ve been sending her cicada memes and she says she’s going to block me LOL

So apparently there are different broods. So Brood X - which is the big one - comes out this year. And the Brood XIII(?) Or XII, can't remember which one- which is more in the northern areas like MI and WI - comes out 2024! I've looked it up for days because I was freaaakkinnn out 😂😂😂 cicadas are my least favorite bugs so I had a huge breakdown over it LOL.

So I hate their "corpses" more 😂😂 I grew up in Australia and we constantly had cicadas. I have memories from when I'm a child with my friends picking the shells of the trees and wearing them around as a brooch and it has traumatized me LOL. I HATE the way their legs feel on my skin.

Yeah, you guys down there deal with some wildlife that scares me!
When I was in the Army in Georgia, there were these massive bugs everywhere and to me they were cockroaches. Big gross ones. Everyone se said “oh those are Palmetto bugs, not cockroaches!” Like that made it any better! We worked in old WWII buildings that were falling down, impossible to keep the bugs out.

LMAO the Palmetto bugs!! I went to school in SC and freaked out the first few times I saw them. People were like don't you have roaches in the north? Yeah...in roach infested apartments, not running down the damn sidewalk!

Hahaha, wow, we have them in PA EVERY YEAR.. it's the sound of summer!! you know it's going to be a REALLY hot day if you hear them before 9am (like 90 degrees and higher) otherwise you hear them on hot summer nights...

    Yes girl,
But the ones that come out every 17 years aren't the same ones as our regular ones that hang out every year! It's cicadas on steroids and billions of them have been waiting 17 years underground to get some action 😂😂
    I'M NOT FOR IT.

These were my DOC'S words :
"17 years ago, it came out full swing by June and you couldn't see what was in front of you because of the swarm of cicadas"

I love that for us. 😂

I think I saw that same post a bit ago as well! I freaked out, did a bunch of research, saw that they'd be in our wedding state, and felt relieved when I saw that they wouldn't be coming out until later in the spring. And of course at the end of my 2 hour long trip down rabbit hole, I realized that my wedding is in 2022, not 2021 so ended up doing another internet dive haha

I'm so sorry you're having to worry about this (as if there isn't enough to worry about these days)! I know you mentioned speaking to your DOC and photographer/videographer, but has your venue offered any advice on their plans for this? They must had some experience with this from 2004. From what I remember reading, it's important to make to give the guests a heads up and educate them that cicadas are not harmful (just gross) so they don't freak out at the surprise, try to have some sort of shop vac on site for "clean-up" if needed, having speakers that are loud enough, and keeping food covered until it's ready to serve.

Giving everyone a heads up is great advice!! I've bought some plastic covers for our cocktail hour food as well! Thank you!

The venue also said there really isn't much they can do, the most they can do is to wrap up the branches because the eggs kill the branches, but I don't think they are willing to do that because then all the weddings they have will have trees with plastic on them. It's a walnut tree farm so people book for those trees 😂😂Girl... our wedding is May 22, so we are straight up in that end of spring category gahhh hahah

I've been in Kentucky for a cicada event and, yeah, it's like nothing else I've ever seen or experienced. It's completely different than just normal but annoying summer bugs. Ugh. I feel for you!

I’m in IL and there were definitely dead cicada bodies on my doorstep every morning last summer.

I was gonna say this too! I'm in CT and I feel we have them every year! I remember I had someone visiting once who had never heard them and was so confused as to why the world was screaming lmao

I think I'm glad I've never run into what everyone else is talking about tho!

There are definitely cicadas every year!😂 but every 17 years, the ones that's been living under ground come out and are different than the ones that live regular cicada lives lol. If you get bored, look up "cicada Brood X 2021" 😂 its petrifiying LOL
