Church is too big

TashaMac, on July 10, 2016 at 11:50 PM Posted in Planning 0 18

So our church has about 500 chairs. It's beautiful, but too big for our wedding. We're only having 100 guests. How can I cover those chairs that I won't be using. Any ideas?? Can I buy like table cloths and throw flower petals on top?? I've looked at other venues, but I really want to get married at my church. I don't want the church to swallow my wedding and what do I do w/those 500 non- folding chairs!!???

My church is way too big for the amount of guests I'm having. I plan on having someone direct people to where they should sit. Have flowers or decorations on the isles that your guests will occupy.

I think by putting other things in the the chairs that won't get used, will attract more attention to them. Honestly, all eyes will be on you and your FH so I will not worry about the size of the church that much if it's the place you two feel comfortable in and want to get married in.

Yeah I would say just to block them off somehow so guests can't sit in the back. I wouldn't cover them but roping them off at each end is a good idea.

Don't they have the "pew ropes" to rope them off- surely they do- every church I've been to has some mechanism for this.

And or - actually use ushers to help organize so they sit to the front.

Thanks Ladies. I was actually starting to look for other venues b/c of that reason alone. I would love to see some pics of some weddings that were done in a space where most of the space wasn't used.

I would block off the ones you aren't going to use

Why do you want to cover them? Is it so that people don't sit in the back? If so, maybe you can have your coordinator, or a designated person ask people (kindly) to sit closer to the front? I think if you try and cover them it will look super odd in pictures.

@Ana.. If my church layout was like that it would be perfect. We just would have everyone sit in front. But it's not. It's waaay more wide, there are like 4 sections and it's chairs, not pews.

It's not about ppl sitting in the back, I know they won't sit in the back, it's just that there are sooooo many chairs all over the place. Like 500. I just don't know if it will look right to just use a little space with all those empty chairs on the left, right and back.

Mine has 4 sections. Photo doesn't show that too well.

Is there a picture you can show us so we can help you better?

I've been to weddings like this. I don't have a picture, but they just had the outside 2 sections and the back of all 4 sections roped off. So they directed everyone to sit in the front section on either side of the aisle. As long as you have ushers to help people stay relatively grouped together, its no big deal. Happens all the time. Your photographer should be able to shoot an angle of the room that does not show all/most the empty sections anyway.

Do you know anyone who has gotten married in your church before? How did they handle it? Are there pictures you can use for ideas?

Don't let something as silly as too many chairs keep you from getting married where you want!

Definitely rope off the sections you won't be using, and have ushers available to help seat people if you think it will still be confusing. Most people will know to fill in, so once you've got 15 or so guests seated, everyone else should be able to figure it out.

Rope it off. You can use ribbon ( i love the tulle) and flowers to make it look nicer. I would stay away from actually covering it though. I think it would be really hard to make it look polished and not like you just threw some sheet over them and also your photographer will have a lot of area to move around to get the best shot if he can still walk through the area.

Use tulle or ribbon to "rope off" the seats you don't want guests to sit in, to keep guests close to the front. Keep in mind you really won't be able to see the unused sections of the church in your pictures.
