Chuppah?

Christina, on July 5, 2011 at 9:28 AM Posted in Planning 0 9

Ok, so... I am Catholic and FH is Jewish... we are having a Catholic ceremony, but he asked me to incorporate one thing from Judaism which is the Chuppah. I have no idea where to begin on finding one, let alone getting it in the church. Any ideas?

As a jewish bride, you can check with local florists to see how much they'd charge. Or you can find a DIY direction online (I think one of the brides on here has a tutorial on how to make a chuppah) Also, check on ebay, or craigslist for local people selling them.

However, Be sure that wherever you're getting married (you mentioned it's a catholic wedding) is completely OKAY with you using a chuppah as well. you could also step on glass instead of using a chuppah? It's cheaper, and can be incorporated into your ceremony, rather than being just a decoration.

Have you been able to confirm you CAN get married in the Catholic church building? From what I've heard, most will not allow the wedding there unless it is a Catholic wedding, with both people being Catholic. You also have to do their counseling, which includes spiritual counseling.

^ good point. My brother and his fiancee are doing their wedding interfaith with a rabbi and a priest, however they have to do it in a synagogue.

For a catholic wedding, both bride and groom must be confirmed catholics and the wedding must take place in the catholic church. You will need to ask the priest if they will allow it. Otherwise, maybe you can use the chuppah at the reception over the head/sweetheart table?

As far as finding a chuppah, I'd use this as a good opportunity to talk to his mother and include her in the wedding planning. That would be a great way to include her, and she'll probably know alot of great resources to get a very beautiful one!

Yeah- We've met with the priest and the wedding day is set! He asked us if we wanted to have any of the Jewish traditions involved with the wedding. The priest is pretty cool.

Most of your local rental shops should have a chuppah available for rent. There are different grades.. find one that you like.

I'm catholic.... I don't think it is a requirement that both have to be catholic... However premarital counseling is a must. My cousin is catholic n his wife is not. They were permitted to have a church ceremony--- i was there. However, I dont know about celebrating part of another religion in church. My priest epuldprobably flip out Smiley smile. But then again it's most likely up to the priest.

The requirements have changed since the olden days Smiley winking... We have been doing counseling with the priest and he said to us that we have more in common and know more about the Bible than when both parties are Catholic. lol... =)
