Choreographed dance in a tight (mermaid style) dress??

mrswinteriscoming, on March 8, 2021 at 6:23 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 9

FH is not huge on dancing while I love it dearly. I suggested that we take some dance classes pre-wedding to help him get more into the groove of things so he’d feel more comfortable dancing at our wedding.

My mother suggested we do a choreographed first dance and I’m impartial to the idea. The difficulty is, I will be wearing a very snug mermaid style wedding dress so I’m not going to have a huge range of movement (and changing into another dress is not an option).

Did you do a choreographed first dance in your wedding dress? If so, what style was the dance (and dress)? Would you do it again?

We did a choreographed dance, and my dress was a large ballgown. We weren't originally going to do it, but then my MIL decided to gift us a package of 5 dance lessons (my husband is not very coordinated on the dance floor to say the least, so the lessons helped a lot). The style we did was a very basic beginner's foxtrot I believe. At the initial lesson, one of the instructor's very first questions was what style of dress I would be wearing. After I told her a large ballgown, she knew to only incorporate moves that could be easily done in a large ballgown. I would assume that the same could be done for a tighter fitting mermaid style dress, but with different moves. I would definitely do it again!

Your instructor should ask what kind of dress you’ll be wearing. If not, tell them.

We haven't yet investigated this further. I know the dance instructors will work with the type of dress (in terms of what steps we are given) but right now I'm more wondering if it is a possible idea for us to actually explore.

We did one and I was in a trumpet style dress so a little more wiggle room than a mermaid. Our went from a slow waltz and then transitioned to a faster hip hop routine. Worked out fine!

We didn't do a choreographed dance, but the swordfight was choreographed - and no, I didn't change. My dress was a corset bodice and A-line skirt, with petticoated layers.

You can do a lot in dresses of all types, so long as the steps are suited to the dress.

I think you will be just fine in the dress you have. I have seen a lot of mermaid dress brides doing choreographed dances

I've seen plenty of brides do choreographed dances in tight-fitting mermaid style dresses. I think you'll be fine. We will be doing a choreographed dance as well
