Choosing between 2 Scottish venues! Halp.

Kate, on November 26, 2019 at 7:16 AM Posted in Planning 0 19

I currently live in Glasgow, Scotland where I met my future husband 5 years ago. We are trying to decide which venue to get married at and we're both STUMPED. Photos of venues at end of discussion so you can see what we're dealing with Smiley ups . We're choosing between:

Òran Mór

Pros:

-Local to us

-We've had many special moments there

-Is a unique and familiar place we both love

-Is beauuuutiful

-has a late license til 2am

-Botanic gardens across the street for photographs

-literally a 5-minute cab ride from our flat

-super accessible via public transport

Cons:

-One large space w/ mezzanine that guests would be in for the whole day (KEEP IN MIND: UK weddings usually start between 11-2pm and go til the venue closes)

-A converted church that has ooold stone stairs that guests would need to climb if they wanted to step outside (there is a lift, but guests would have to go through the pub downstairs [also v pretty] to access it)

-on the corner of two busy streets

Crossbasket Castle

Pros:

-Multiple spaces for guests to use throughout the day

-accommodation within the castle for bridal party night of or before

-rental of entire building so we'd be in a little wedding bubble

-also very pretty

-attached gardens/grounds (though doesn't hold a candle to botanic gardens)

Cons:

-we have no personal connection to the venue or the village (High Blantyre)

-no nearby accommodation for guests

-the drive to the venue is... kinda crap (car repair garages, etc.)

-not easily accessible via public transport

Now for the pictures!

God that's a hard one! They are both gorgeous!! Personally, I like the Castle better, but, and that's a big but, I would be really worried that there are no nearby accomodations for your guests! If they drink they would likely need transportation, which can be expensive...

They're both gorgeous, but if a lot of people need to travel by public transport or need accomodations, it makes more sense to go with the first one.

P.S. my fiance and I REALLY want to visit Scotland. His grandparents are from there. We're actually having kilts at our wedding and it's Celtic / Renaissance themed.

Those are stunning venues! I would go with what you have a larger personal connection to. The second place is absolutely beautiful, but you said you have no connection to it. Granted after this you would have a BIG one, but I feel like the first place had better “pros” to it. Is there a huge difference in price?

Òran Mór is considerably less expensive, but Crossbasket includes the on-site accommodation in their price as well as on-site coordination. However, the offset of possibly needing to provide transportation has me leaning back toward the first...

Ahhh I think you're right! And how exciting that you'll have kilts at your wedding. It's definitely expected here that the groom, groomsmen, and dads wear matching kilts at weddings, though many people choose not to. Our guys will be sporting the Campbell/Black Watch tartan!

If you make it to Glasgow definitely visit the pub that's downstairs at Òran Mór Smiley smile

That's totally why we're hesitant to go for the castle. The cost and coordination makes my head spin a bit Smiley xd

It sounds like you really want to go with Òran Mór. The pros seem to outweigh the cons and it is gorgeous!!! We're planning on taking our delayed honeymoon to England, Ireland, and Scotland next year and I may just have to add this one to the list.

You're so right. Honestly, writing this out has been really helpful in pushing me toward Òran Mór... Now I just need to see if the fiancé is thinking the same. I can't recommend Glasgow enough, especially the pub at Òran Mór!

Both are beautiful and I am a sucker for a castle, however I think the cons for Crossbasket Castle outweigh the pros in this case, specifically no nearby guest accommodations and not easily accessible via public transportation.

I would go for Òran Mór. If you're worried about guests being in one room the whole night (which there is nothing wrong with), then add some things to make it interactive. Add a photo booth or some games. If there is room, add a couch and some comfy chairs and a low table so it's like a "lounge area". Have plenty of dancing and add some late night snacks.

Hey! I also have a Scottish husband I met 5 years ago too haha. We live in Edinburgh but go through to Glasgow a lot and we went to a wedding at Oran mor last year! The couple had super pretty uplighting and when we walked in I thought it looked amazing. We were evening guests so we didn’t have dinner but the evening buffet was super delicious (not sure if the venue did the catering though). They did have a photo booth which kept people entertained and the dance floor was massive. If you’re doing a ceilidh it’s perfect. If you’re expecting a lot of people to have to travel to the other venue and not a lot of people drive etc I think staying central sounds great. Best of luck with everything!

Òran Mór would be my choice, given the pros you listed in comparison with the castle! It's a gorgeous venue

No wonder you’re stuck!! OMFG! Both are stunning!

My heart says go with the first- as it is clearly a very special place for you both.
However, the charm of the second is intriguing. And the drive doesn’t really matter btw- yes pretty would be better, but they are heading to see you...
Go with the first. Good luck!

That's the kicker for us too... I think if it was like, a beautiful 30 minute drive through rolling hills it would be different maybe, but being central is so much easier for us and guests!

That is so helpful, seriously! We're definitely doing a ceilidh at the end of the night, so it's great to know there'll be enough space to strip the willow Smiley xd . Thank you!!

    Welcome to the WeddingWire community!!

They are both such beautiful venues Kate!! I can definitely see why you are having trouble deciding!

Have you gone on site visits to both locations to get the feeling of what they are like, beyond looking at photos?
