Chocolate fountain

Reeves, on January 29, 2017 at 8:42 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

Just looking for opinions on chocolate fountains at weddings? Good idea or bad? Anyone have experience with having/using them?

I feel like it would just be a mess but I've also never seen one at a wedding before (I've only been to 3 anyways). I want to do something a little different other than cookies along with the cake. Any other ideas?

Bad idea. I was a catering manager and often we saw grown adults, as well as children, sticking their hands in the fountain and licking their fingers then going back for more. It's a huge sanitation issue.

Also, messy. You really want someone running into your expensive dress with chocolate all over?

Personally I think it's a bad thing for all the reasons she listed above.

It's a bad idea, and it really isn't different - it was a trendy thing back in '03-'04 (don't ask how I know lol), and I, for one, was grateful when people stopped thinking they were the greatest thing since sliced bread. They are a huge mess, unsanitary and way more trouble than they are worth. I am really not trying to pop your balloon here, just a bit of reality.

No your fine Smiley smile I thought it was a great idea until I thought about anyone touching me with chocolate on their hands. Idk what else I should do besides cookies.

Reeves, we had "top your own" cheesecakes which were a hit until people realized the baker didn't add sugar (yeah, not happy about that). We had strawberries, cherries, and chocolate. We also had a s'mores bar which went over really well.

Oh I love that idea!! So you just ordered regular cheesecake and supplied all toppings or they supplied that also?

And was that self serve or did they do it for u?

They supplied everything for us. Most bakers will make a sheetcake of cheesecake and cut it into squares or you could do the triangle slices (more expensive that way though).

ETA it was self serve but I am not aware of any issues stemming from that. People told me about the bland cheesecake but nothing about disliking the self-serve option.

I once was at a wedding where they had rented a chocolate fountain from a local candy store (where they make all their own stuff...so good). The chocolate fountain came with a chocolatier who manned the fountain: kept it topped up, kept all the dipping things supplied, and made sure people didn't do the messy, unsanitary things mentioned above. That would probably make a chocolate fountain work out fine, but I'm sure it was rather on the expensive side!

I usually avoid chocolate fountains at wedding or public events. Too many children (and sometimes adults) don't understand that you shouldn't double dip or put you fingers in the fountain. Too many germs.

But, I was at 1 weddimg that had a chocolate fountain that was handled very well. They put out a table with skewers and foods to dip (marshmallows, strawberries, bananas, etc). After we chose our foods, we took it to the fountain where a staff member dipped the skewer under the fountain. The guests never dipped anything themselves and the fountain was always staffed.

Messy messy. I've seen people slip their fingers into those things so it a huge turn off for me. I did go to a wedding with one and they had one of the cater staff do all of the dipping for the guests, so it was controlled. If you really want it, maybe you can go that way. It kept the mess down.

Honestly, cake is enough for me at a wedding.
