Chocolate covered oreos as a favor...thoughts/recipe?

Laura, on May 7, 2010 at 5:39 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

So I have been trying to think of a cheap, but useful favor for the wedding. Personally I would like to donate money to an animal shelter, however my FH is a bit groomzilla on having favors. I came across chocolate covered oreos to buy, but then I got to thinking that maybe I could make them for way cheaper. I am not about to spend a ton of money on favors. I am thinking maybe I could make two per person and somehow get green chocolate to put a "P" on each one, then put the two oreos in a little favor bag for everyone. What do you think? Is it as easy as it sounds? Do you have an easy way to do this? Thanks Smiley smile

Mmmmmmm... I want some now! I can't imagine it would be difficult, at all. I'm going to make my own favors as well, cut those costs like crazy!

It sounds like a good idea-- but in my experience dipping chocolate in large quantities isn't as easy as it sounds. I say try it a few times and see what happens! It might work really well. Smiley smile

We are making our own favors too--- we've decided to bake large snickerdoodles because it will be easy and I just don't want to have to put a lot into baking/preparing favors the week before the wedding.

Below is the recipe for inside out oreo...they are excellent and easy to make! Everyone at my work loves it when I make them!!!! Just an idea...

    Ingredients

    4 ounces cream cheese

    1/2-1 package Oreo cookies

11-12 ounces white chocolate chips or 12 ounces vanilla candy coating

    Directions

1 Place cream cheese and Oreos in food processor.

2 Process until no more white can be seen and mixture begins to stick together.

3 Roll mixture into 3/4 inch balls.

4 Place on waxed paper covered sheet and freeze for 30 minutes or until firm.

5 Melt chips (add 1T oil if you like thinner chocolate) or candy coating.

6 Dip balls into chocolate using a toothpick or a dipping fork.

7 I drizzle with melted semi-sweet chocolate for the effect and to cover up the mark from the toothpick!

8 Return to waxed paper to set.

9 These set faster in the frig.

10 The candy coating sets much faster than the chips.

11 I use candy coating whenever I can find it.

Thanks for the input! Future Mrs.-Thanks for sharing. I am going to save this recipe in case I decide to go this route. Even if I don't I might just make them 'just because.' haha Smiley smile

A co-worker of mine brought chocolate covered peanut butter ritz. OMG they were to die for. She did them with white chocolate as well as hershey chocolate. You take two ritz crackers put a think layer of creamy peanut butter and then cover them with the chocolate. They were yummy!! Good luck!

I think this could be a good idea, but I think you should have some independent tasters make sure it doesn't suck. So let me give you my address and you can send me a dozen or so from each batch for me to try. Anyone who's doing quality assurance has to have multiple samples from each batch to know if they're truly good. I'm sure a few others would also like to help make sure your favors are the best they can be. Smiley smile

Part of me thinks this sounds good and part of me feels like Id be annoyed you ruined a perfectly good oreos (I love oreos....) Smiley smile

ok, Ive done chocolate covered pretzels a few times and have alwayd found it hard to get the chocolate evenly around the pretzel (especially since if you late it flat to dry one side gets messed up). Anyways...what about choocate covered pretzels instead (those you can be a little less neat with and if they arent perfect no one notices or cares).

Either way...a recomedation-once you dip them (whatever you are dipping), lay them on cookie cooling sheets to harden. That way the side facing down gets less *messed up* oh...and stickin them in the fridge for really helps the hardening process.

to get green chocolate-use white chocolate and dye it green!

    have fun dipping!

Oh...heres a recipe, its for pretzels, but whatever, the important part of the recipe is the same. Though, Im always disappointed with how little melted chocolate you get out of the packages of squares of chocolate (ive used those bakers squares before)...you may just want to use chocolate chips.

6 (1 ounce) squares white chocolate

1 (15 ounce) package mini twist pretzels

1/4 cup red and green candy sprinkles (optional)

    Directions:

    1. Melt white chocolate in the top of a double boiler, stirring constantly.

    2. Dip pretzel halfway into the white chocolate, completely covering half of the pretzel. Roll in topping if desired, and lay on wax paper.

    3. Continue the process until all of the white chocolate is finished. Place in refrigerator for 15 minutes to harden. Store in airtight container.

Shannon C-Haha! Although I do appreciate your generous offer to taste the oreos, I can probably find some independent tasters around home. However if you ever pass through western PA maybe I can throw you a couple...lol

bluedaisy, thanks for the tip. I had also thought of pretzels. I will keep the recipe that you posted Smiley smile

    Lmbrady8,

I am with you. Forget the favors and give money to your local animal shelter. You have no clue how much your donation will mean to them.

I am a volunteer with and all volunteer, no-kill, free-roam cat shelter. We would love it if brides and grooms would send us the amount they would have spent on favors, most of which are left behind or thrown away.

Oh Kathy I wish I could. For some reason, however, FH is dead set on favors. I guess I still have some time to work on it, but I don't see him changing his mind. *sigh*
