Hi there! My wonderful mother-in-law is hosting a Chinese tea ceremony for us prior to our Western wedding ceremony and I am really struggling to find a dress.
I am not Asian-American (very white - Welsh background), so I'm sensitive about not wanting to appropriate anything. At the same time, I know dressing in a red Qipao would make my very Chinese in-laws and extended family very happy, and I genuinely want to honor them and their culture. To make things more complicated, I'm fairly petite with comparatively massive hips, so just practically finding something that fits properly is challenging.
I have a simple red dress with a high neckline and form-fitting shape that resembles the qipao silhouette, so that's one option. On the other hand, I could order something more authentic from Hong Kong or China, either made of stretchy material, or custom made to my measurements (which I've heard can still turn out not too flattering for my shape).
Has anyone dealt with a similar situation, or have some advice?
