Chinese food as wedding dinner

Michelle, on January 24, 2021 at 2:25 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 19
My sister and her boyfriend just got engaged after the first of the year and mentioned that they want to have a local (Americanized) Chinese restaurant cater. Would this appeal to you if you were a guest? How many (and which) entree/sides selections would you offer? They are postponing until Covid vaccine is wider spread since she works in healthcare but wanting to keep it on the smaller side.

As a huge fan of Chinese food, I would be ecstatic if I attended a wedding that served it!!

I love Chinese food, but I'm currently pregnant so I'm not really supposed to eat it until after I have the baby. I also know a few people who don't like Chinese food so she might want to take things like this into consideration.

I also love Chinese food!! My favorites are white rice, sweet and sour chicken and egg rolls 🥠🍜 how cute would it be if the fortune cookies inside said “congratulations on their wedding” or a personal message ❤️

In my culture that’s what we have and it’s AMAZING - it is hands down far better than any American catering I’ve ever had but I am biased haha. In asian culture we do a ten course family style meal traditionally for weddings. BUT I will say this is dependent on how receptive your guests are cause it is a lot more seafood typically and some guests just aren’t into that. Of course you can customize that though to be less seafood. Most of my guests raved about the food but there were a handful who weren’t used to different kinds of food like that. It’s also a lot of courses haha so traditionally Asians do 8-10 courses but if you’re able to pick and choose you can do less.

Depends. Like local nonchain Chinese, I’m not a fan of. But PF Chang Chinese would be delish!
General Tso chicken is a popular favorite. Maybe a beef and broccoli.
But as a PP mentioned not everyone likes Chinese food. So an alternative option would be good if she goes this route.

I hate Chinese food; however, this is whatever you and your FH want! Just make sure to have a variety and appetizers so some of your guests don’t starve lol

They were considering having something else catered for those who don't like Chinese.

Simply do as almost all Chinese restaurants do and have some plain fried chicken available, or rotiserie chicken. Pears and pineapple are pretty easy and compatible.

This wouldn't appeal to me (or work for me) because I'm allergic to soy and basically all Chinese food is made with soy sauce. Soy is actually one of the most common food allergies these days! If the couple provided a non-Chinese food option for those with soy allergies, then that would work though.

That sounds so yummy!! I would choose ginger salad or miso soup as the appetizer, and orange chicken or beef and broccoli with white or fried rice and egg rolls as the entree. I’d also do some type of wonton or potsticker for an appetizer (I’m getting hungry now just thinking about it)!! YUM!!!

I’m in the minority, but unless it were traditional Chinese or dim sum I would find this unappealing. It may be more of a know your crowd thing.

There are always going to be people unhappy with whatever food choice. For me I will be as accommodating as possible about allergies and preferences so will make a big effort to offer alternatives - we know a few vegans and gf - but everyone will have different ideas.
Chinese sounds great, and most places I’ve been to have options like fried chicken, rice and vegetables that are not seasoned with the standard flavorings you get in Americanized Chinese food. Go for it!

I wouldn’t be crazy about this idea. I am not supposed to eat much soy, but most Chinese food is laden with it. I’d probably go hungry until cake time.

I've been to a wedding with catered Americanized Chinese food, and it was a big hit!! For the people who don't love the seasonings (or are sensitive to soy), maybe an unseasoned chicken, rice, and vegetables option? I think it's always a good idea to have a few options for those with dietary restrictions (vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, etc)...but overall, I think this idea could be a big hit!!

Why does the menu have to be "expected" selections as long as food is good and filling?
